View Full Version : Weird RPM problem...

Okay, first off, I own a '07 4.0 Automatic, and I noticed something weird with the RPM's on normal driving.

I don't know if this is a problem or whats wrong, but when I'm cruising at like 40-60 mphish (normal driving, AC off), when I slightly press on the gas, the RPM stays at around 1.5k rpm and does not move... I hear the engine roar a little bit but the RPM's do not move past 1.5k. When I put a little more gas it still kinda doesn't do it but when I press it more it kinda bogs forward and jumps the rpmg to like 3kish..

I only have 4050 miles on the car, there shouldn't be anything wrong with the car...

Any ideas on what it could be?

That's what mine does as well when it's in 5th gear the bogging is when it shifts back down to 4th while you push the gas harder. If you want to get the rpms back up before you press the gas just press the O/D button off on the shifter which will bring it into 4th gear then your rpms will jump a bit and yeah.

I dont' think it's an issue with the car but if it is i guess i got to get mine checked when i bring it in for the recall(which i still have done oops)

When I turn the O/D Off it is fine, but with other gears the RPM's respond just fine.. only in that gear the RPM sticks to 1.5k

I think it's just the way 5th gear is on our cars but i could be wrong hopefully some one else responds as they might have a more accurate response.

At 50 mph the car wouldn't be in 5th gear, it would more likely be 3rd gear. thanks for trying though

Hmm... In my manual, in 5th gear, it's spinning around 1500rpms at 50mph. Why would an auto's 3rd gear be an overdrive?

So your saying it is actually the 5th gear that has the problem? And that other people have this as well (the rpm sticking to 1500)?

I'm not saying it's a "problem", just that the car, if you're not under a load, just cruising around 50mph, it's probably in top gear. It's an automatic, all of my past cars with autos responded like that. The computer wants to keep it in overdrive until IT determines that a downshift is required because you want to accelerate. If you floor it, does it act the same way?

No, past a certain point of pressing the gas it downshifts and raises the rpms. But if I'm just cruising the RPM's don't bounce at all, freezes at 1.5k. Overdrive off, it goes to 2k rpm and when I press the gas lightly it shifts between 2k-2.5k, but with it on it just freezes at 1.5k rpm..

The problem is 'its an automatic'. [:o]

Sounds like it's working right to me. You don't want the car to downshift everytime you just give it a little more gas. To put it into perspective, mine is a manual, if I press on the gas, the rpms don't "jump" up, it has to build up, unless I down shift to a lower gear. And being around 1500rpms in 5th, it's not going to build very fast, it just kind of "lugs" the engine until it builds up.

I'm not talking about it downshifting everytime I press the gas. When I'm going like 20 mph and it is at 1.5k rpm, and press the gas lightly, the RPM's don't stick at 1.5, it goes up to 2k. Only in that gear is where it stick to 1.5..

I swear it never did this before, i'm not crazy lol.

Going 20mph at 1500rpms is not top gear. OD is just that, it spins the rear at more revs than the engine is turning. If you floor it and it hauls a**, what's the problem? Aren't these autos adaptive? If it is, it learned it's shifting patterns based on how you drive. There is nothing more irritating than an auto that has to down shift going up every little hill, or everytime you just want to gain speed. Sounds like you expect it to act like a 4 cylinder with an auto.

my car will be in 5th at 35 if not sooner...i accelerate hard to around the speed limit and when i let off it automatically goes throught he gears to 5th unless O/D is off...idk what ur deal is...i hit the gas at any speed and it'll take off just fine no probs without mods - takes off better if you shift it yourself, but hmm......

Avalanch it is normal, and yes your car will be in 5th gear at 50 mph. The tranny will put it in the lowest gear possible to achieve the best fuel economy and least strain on the engine. When you step on the gas it will try and accelerate, if there is too much load on that gear to pull the car it will jump into a different gear, up the rpm's and get you up to the speed you want.

Now with that being said, I noticed the same thing and the computer has alot to do with it. When I got my 3.73's it changed the car and I no longer have that problem.

Basically the 5th gear/OD is a pain, but a nice set of gears will help bring some pep into it and you will notice a difference.

Do you have a tune? I got the problem with a tune ( I don't like to name it ). I bought another tune and no more the problem.

No, the only real mod for I got is a GT Take-off muffler.

I'm glad that its not a big problem, I though my transmission was failing on me...

Anyways this brings me to another question, kind of irrelevant to the other, but nonetheless doesn't deserve a new thread (NOTE: I have only tried this once):

Since I have the auto, I have D, 3, 2 and 1. Driving in those gives me more torque, but low high end, right? Me and some of my buddies at school kind of go "cruising" highway 9, about like 9 cars total, and basically all of highway 9 is turns (sharp ones in fact). I only need that torque and quick throttle response (no i'm nto getting a CAI + Tune, i'm broke) Since I have an auto, I can't just leave it at 4k RPM, so would putting it in 3 with O/D off do the job? Or am I hurting the car when I do that, because I'm driving in 3 at like 40-60 mph at 4k rpm?
