Several times my linkage had locked up tighter than ever. I've had to take the rods off the trans and shift the gears manually and then replace the rods. After I do this everything is OK. Anybody have any suggestions? If I remember correctly, my buddy's 65 GT350 used to do it often.

mine has done it, after i first put it in the car, and now i havent driven it in but once out of theyard and back in. i didnt have to replace any rods though.
Sounds like the nuts holding the linkage rods in place are loosening up, or the rods just aren't aligned properly and the shifter is trying to shift the tranny into two gears at once.
Realign the linkage rods and tighten the nuts down real tight. If it keeps happening, check to see if the rods have shifted at all.
I did notice there is some play in the rods. I may also have to replace the bushings. I will take your advice and check the nuts and see if the linkage is bound.
Not so much binding that I'd be concerned about as loose or improper adjustment. If the linkage isn't set up right, the shifter won't shift out of one gear before you try to shift into another, which will completely lock the entire unit up.
