View Full Version : Sound off! Twin Screw rides w/ 4.10 gears

How does the car handle with Twin Screw (Whipple, Saleen, KB, etc..) and 4.10 gears?

Streetable? Unstreetable? No traction and is dangerous?

Hooks up fine if you know how to start off half bore then get heavy with the pedal?

Do you want different gear ratio?

It works fine up top, but is hard on the car down low?

No problems whatsoever and am totally satisfied with 4.10s?

in 1st and 2nd if i get on full throttle off the line it loses traction real easy, but if you give it less than full throttle and learn how to do it, it works just fine. my tires are not that great for traction either, and my suspension is stock so that adds to my traction troubles. but it is safe for the street, if you just dont floor it off the line. eventually i will get better rubber, and maybe some LCA's, and see how it is after that. but for now i like the 4.10's, from a roll they give great acceleration, and i dont do much track racing so it's fine for me. if i had to do it all over again i probly would have gotten 3.73 or stayed w/ the 3.55's, but its not too bad to make me want to change it right now.

My combo is very streetable and top end hasn't suffered much either. I went 130mph the other day and still had 1500 more rpm to go. So down low they are fun with the s/c and now 5th gear is fun to drive in also.

i know moosestang has the HO (i think?) whipple with 4.10's. i think he used to run M&H dr's until they made him hydroplane out of nowhere.

with a combo that violent, nothing but the most extreme street tires will hold up.

Actually you are wrong on this one. I have Nitto street tires (not the drag radials) and I am getting 1.77 - 1.78 60ft times and have been 11.90 @ 120 best pass with 8.5 lbs of boost. I put the factory H pipe back on and bumped the pressure to 11.0 lbs and the car is a blast to drive on the street. Haven't taken it back to the track with the added boost yet. The car only went 1.97 60ft N/A on the same tires. My car weighs 3890 with me in it. I weigh 180.

what kind of hp/tq numbers do you have at 8.5 psi and at 11 psi?
do you have any other mods to your engine? those are nice times btw.

Again I agree with you .....and now I am getting 4.10's esp after the ride I took in one the other day that had FI! I could tell the difference from my 3.55's:DORIGINAL: onederful100

Well it wasn't out of nowhere, I saw the puddles coming, just didn't think it was that much water. There's nothing wrong with 4.10's and a twin screw. You are going to spin in 1st and 2nd with 3.55's and the stock tires. I think I could get by with a good UHP tire, atleast with the 8psi pulley. I'm saving the drag radials for the track from now on.

4.10s work fine with a turbo too

I have'nt gone to the dyno yet. I finished the auto tranny off the second time to the track but have since put a good used one back in. The shifts are much more firm and solid. I drive it daily and want to make sure I dont break it again. Jim Bell from Kenne Bell superchargers said according to his slide rule that 3890 lbs @ 120 mph says over 500 to the crank. Most people say about 420-430 to the tires at 8.5 lbs. I feel I'm over 450 with 11. The 8.5 was showing 9.0 on my guage and the 10.0 lb is showing 11. No other mods to the engine.

I have always said that 3.55's where fine with a TS since 1-2nd are useless anyway. But the more I think about it the more I think it would be more fun in 3-5th with 4.10's. Those gears are pretty tall, so I think 4.10's might be the way to go.

Maybe if moose would offer me a ride, it might push me over the endge into spending more money. :D

Do you want to go for a ride with the 8psi pulley or the 10? Sometimes it feels like the tires will break loose in 3rd gear with the 10. Let's do a roll race in 3rd and we can see how much quicker I am.;) You could be making more power than me though, you never know.

Are you North of the airport or South? I'd rather meet you somewhere like Eustis than Daytona. It'd be easier for me to go straight down hwy 19 and that's a fun road with a supercharged mustang.:D

Don't have a t/s but 4:10's+twinscrew+ street tires=some seious spin in first and second. I have a centri with decent suspension and good sreet tires and I will spin at about 4-5k. Second hooks fine. Buddy has whipple/3:90's with my similar suspension/tire setup. I would keep the stock gears if I were to get a t/s and it was a DD..

1st is useless with any gears. I would like to be able to use full throttle in 2nd without spinning, but i'm not sure there's a street tire up to the task.

Probably 8psi so I can feel the difference in the gears. I would think we should be within 10rwhp power wise but who knows. The only I have different is the relocated IAT, stock clutch and no Alum D/S

I live 15 mins NW of the airport. Right near where 528 and 417 cross. I am sure we can find a good place halfway imbetween. Next time I get a weekend without my wife making plans (few and far between [&:]) I will shoot you a PM.
---------

And back on topic I think anyone with over 450rwhp and a TS will hook up in 1rst or 2nd on street tires. But I think a little extra in 3-5 is good.

Another thing to think about is your rear tire height. I plan on goin to a 28" rear tire, which will give me a taller final gear ratio. Maybe I should split the difference and go 3.90's.

You should be able to tell us. I'm curious. How do you hook from a dig at wot in first?

MustangGT0405

Me? I have to stay out of the boost in 1rst or I get no traction at all. I have to feather second to not spin around 4700rpms.

I normally short shift first and second and go WOT in 3rd.

Honestly currently I dont think I am any faster in 1rst than I was with the CAI and tune. Eventually I am going to run some big meats on the back which will hopefully help, but at the moment no $$.

I have 2 very expensive hobbies, car and gun collecting. After the blower I have been spending money on other stuff.

Next year is round 2 that will include wheels.
