so i went to my local exhaust shop and we put my 04 v6 up on the lift and i told him that i want my y pipe cut right after the cat's and then a set of duals fabd up with flowmaster 40's and he said that was a bad idea because i prob. wouldnt pass inspection/emmisions with a cut y pipe, and i would lose alot of my low end torque/hp. so he said my best option was to have them put on a single flowmaster 40 right after the y pipe so it would have single in dual out and let them fab up dual pipes, he said that is my best option for sound and power, is it???

if i buy the muffler and tailpipes online he said to assemble it all = $250 labor

if i let them do every thing muffler/piping/chrome tips = $475

do those numbers sound about right to u guys

That sounds pretty good to me.

Despite what he said, I would go with your original plan of cutting the pipes after the cat and running true duals straight back. The prices seem about right (depending on where you live that is).

You will pass inspection as long as you keep your cats and don'thave dumps.

price sound nearish do a bit more searching i found prices ranging from 350 to 600 in my area

yea im going to go to a couple more places and see what they tell me. that was just the second place i been. the first was crazy he wanted 500 in labor alone because he said it would take him a day and a half to do a true dual set up

Honestly the one muffler and split to 2 pipes may sound better than having 2 mufflers, due to not losing as much backpressure.

hey man get another quote because if you really think thats kinda high. A general price for them to do it all should be around 250 ish. Not 475, id check with all the other local shops.

i would just go with your original idea. tell him to shove it if he tells you its gonna take a day and a half to bend two pipes to connect the cats to the muffler and weld

i found my GT take offs on cragslist and got them for 40 bucks. mufflers and tailpipes im sure you could find gt take offs for cheap, and pick up those knock off flowmasters cus they sound the same, and then all the shop has to do is put it up, and bend two pipes and weld

my shop only wanted 120 to install the whole thing and connect the mufflers to the cats

Like TurtleSlow I got my GT take offs from craigslist for 50 bucks, bought some Force Pro mufflers from Summit and had true duels fabed up for 90 total for labot and install of everything. Go true duels you be happier in the long run.

on my v6 with a little modification

For price comparision, I just had a complete 3" dual setup fabbed up and installed with flowmasters for $450. That was parts, labor, everything. Took the guy about 3 hours to do.


Btw: this was on my vette, not mustang.

It was a shop that was under a place called "lakeway tire". Basically like a modica bros or discount tire.

To the OP: One thing to consider before making your choice is the plans you have for the car in the future. If you plan on other performance mods (headers, cam, supercharger, etc) then you need to go dual, if not, single splitting to dual will be fine.

If you decide to go dual, you may want to consider using anxpipe or hpipe also. Divorced duals can sound pretty nasty on a 6er.

i say go dual b.c u never know if you'll want to do other performance mods or not... i mean why not do it to be on the safe side... instead of doin some single and then later on down the road u want to do a performance mod but won't get the best of it cause your exhaust.... just do it to be on the safe side, u REALLY have nothing to lose my friend

well i mean its a 2004 but its got 90,000 miles on it plus its an automatic so im not trying to turn it into a track car plus i have to start worrying about college next year as it will be my last year in highscool. the only mod i have planned for it at this time are the exhaust, a tuner, and a cold air intake.

tell me if im crazy but wouldnt it be cheaper to just by an h pipe then insert some cat's and find gt takeoffs with the flowmaster super 40s already in it. or to buy a catted h pipe

holy sh*t, i paid $225 to get my LTs installed and 2 cats weldeding into my H pipe and everything installed

i have a dual 2.5" exhaust with cats and i passed MA emissions

ha yes that is what im thinking of doing now thanks. its a good thing that the shop called me after i put my car in and they said umm we have to custom order you a shorter muffler so yea im going to tell them to just cancel that and im going to go with a custom made catted h pipe cuz i have some good friends that can do the welding for me.
