camshaft position sensor/syncro question

mustang99v6 -> camshaft position sensor/syncro question (5/9/2008 9:40:56 AM)

okay, I'm getting some oil seepage on the top of my engine. had it looked at and it seems to be the o-ring on my camshaft position sensor(camshaft syncronizer). ford wants $15 for this rubber washer. I can buy an entire new assembly for $30 from rockauto. any recommendations? is there a life on the part so that I should be getting a new one anyway? or are they lifetime and just put a new rubber on it? also, i see them mention an alignment tool. is there a special procedure I have to go to in taking mine out and replacing it or the o-ring?

I'd try going with the o-ring first, because the new sensor may not even include it and there's no reason to fix something that isn't broken. As far as an alignment tool, I'm not sure, and I'm offshore so I have none of my Dealer manuals with me. I'll be home in the morning and I can look at make sure.

I also recommend going to the parts store and buying a Hanyes or Chiltons manual, or both.

You need the alignment tool to reposition the sensor. Also Mark exactly how the sensor is possitioned in the block too, take a picture as well because that will help too.

It is very important to get it exactly back where it was or you will have fuel injector firing issues.

The alignment tool is only a couple bux.

Chances are that it comes with the new CPS along with that rubber ring. Go down there and check out whats in their kit.

If your going to have it out then you may as well replace it if its that cheap, but if its not a FOMOCO product I would not change it. I like to stick with what I know had extensive OEM testing.
