rearaxle 9" housing to 3rd member. gasket or gasketmaker

kalli -> rearaxle 9" housing to 3rd member. gasket or gasketmaker (5/9/2008 4:51:26 AM)

Hi all,

I received a housing and 3rd member, but forgot to order the gasket.
I've rear that they tend to leak anyways, so it's better to use a product like 'gasketmaker'.
Any opinions on this, or products I should be looking for?
Ford here gets scared when I mention classic mustang. They have no clue and are afraid selling wrong part.
So instead of ordering a gasket from states, I'd love to know if there's an alternative

thanks a million

Kalli

i allways use a good silicone one from you parts store should do the trick just make sure its clean i just put a thin coat on let set 4or 5 min and then bolt in 3rd member
good luck

asked Brydon, who sold it to me and he recommends the silicon as well. So I'll go with that.
Just to let you all know. It might depend from application to application, so I'll go with what the seller suggests.
Thanks rmodel65 and quesey for your opinions!

I recommend both.  RTV on the housing, lay the gasket over the studs, rtv on the other side, then bolt it all together.

thx Tad,

seller says he didn't sent gasket as he recommends RTV only. I would put in a gasket and RTV as you suggest, but that would involve ordering and waiting for 1-2 weeks, that I don't want to wait.
If I go to a car part store, they don't know what to give me if the car is older than 5 years and Ford here doesn't have any expertise on that whatsoever as well. So unless anyone says the 2008 Ford Transit has the same gasket I won't be able to source one here

Nope, specific to the Ford 8".  If it's that much of a problem, I'd just RTV it.  I think it'll be fine.

Make sure the surfaces are clean before the RTV. I usually tighten the bolts just snug, then let it set overnight, and finish tightening them down the next AM. No leaks so far.

I always use ultra black RTV on mine. a thin amount on each side and put them together with no gasket. Aftermarket rearends are much stronger than the original 8 and 9's so they don't flex and cause leaks.

oh sweet, that's good to hear.
thanks Mike and Richard?(CPR) and Tad!/ I'll RTV it
