Gutting out cats?

90notchLF -> Gutting out cats? (5/8/2008 10:21:34 PM)

Went to the muffler shop today looking to replace my 4 cats. The guy there told me that instead of buying all 4 cats what they usually do with fox mustangs is that they gut out the two fron cats and leave them completly hollow but still on the car for visual inspection and install two high flow cats in the rear. The guy said this would give me more HP better fuel economy and would still pass California smog without a problem.

Has anyone here ever done this or heard of this and if so is it true?

or just buy a 2 cat midpipe, which is still legal, i dont think you have to have the front 2 to pass visual, i doubt half the tards doing it even know about them

Yes he is 98% correct. How much does he want to charge you? You might be better off just getting a nice brand new aftermarket H pipe with cats.

The guy is charging me $500.

Has anyone had any experience with gutting the two front one's out out?

Just a heads up and quick search, it is cheaper to buy a bbk off of jegs and install it yourself then to have them do it.  And gutting those cats will create a turbulence in exhaust and make it sound weirdd!

+1 definitely buy an OR pipe. It makes it sound better, its easier, cheaper, and when you need to smog, you change it out in 20 min.

It doesn't make good sense to pay $500 to a muffler shop to do that when you can buy a street legal catted x or h pipe and install it yourself. Get a nice set of headers with the $100 you'll save.

+1 exactly. If you are worried about doing it yourself it's not too bad. If you need help just ask.

Stock H sucks and its heavy, dont waste any time or money w the stock pipe.  I had a shop install a Magnaflow H w/ cats for $550.  Im going to install a O/R h pipe this weekend.  If you want i could sell the Magnaflow H for $200.

I agree with getting a catted H or X pipe, aftermarket, gutting a stock one is more work than its worth, in my opinion. Good Luck

California emissions suck [&:]

i gutted mine, its sounds good actually, but since i have a stroker motor, i need more flow, 2.5in o/r h for me now :)

it has that real sleeper look lol

sYckmYnded -> RE: Gutting out cats? (5/9/2008 5:51:44 PM)

$500 is insane i do it at my shop all day long cats included for $275 thats H pipe with 2 flow through dummy cats for inspection

90notchLF -> RE: Gutting out cats? (5/9/2008 7:39:07 PM)

I decided to just go get an aftermarket H pipe.

Thanks for the advice fellas.
