I took her out for a drive today. I was on the way to my buddies place where my gears will be changed tomorrow to 3.55's and my heater core went. It happened when I jumped on it. Here I am tring to keep her straight and wondering what the heck was going on. Then the steam started and I though, Holly crap I'm on fire! I quickly realized it was only steam. Here is the video of when it happened. You can't see it happen but I'm sure you will enjoy it anyway[:)] Turn the volume up, it's better that way!

I have never replaced a heater core. Can someone give me a quick run down. Thanks guys!

Are you running the factory restrictor elbow on the manifold, or just a cheapo open piece?  The factory pieces have both a tube that extends into the coolant stream to keep from sucking up air, and a restrictor built into the elbow that keeps the engine from trying to push too much coolant through the heater core.

yeah too much fluid is a problem with the 5.0 guys, also another common problem is old fluid. the fluid can actually become acidic basically functioning as a battery its a good idea to change fluid at the recommended intervals. and also to only use distilled water (no minerals etc)  tp water only speeds the devastation

No, I am not running a restrictor. I had to use a 45 degree fitting due to the weiand. I will add one in line now that you suggested that. It never even crossed my mind about the psi. Thanks for the info[:)]

Call Glazier's, they sell a longer factory elbow. I got mine from them:)

what to get a clena looking heater install, go to the junkyard and buy the water tube off of the intake manifold. it will get rid of the 1and and 1/2 of hose from the intake to the firewall

hmm i was wondering why the elbows had the long tube on them. of course, the originals are pretty much corroded away.

but i have a brand new heater core, so would i need to worry about it being affected by the psi since i dont hve a long elbow?

Yes, especially if you spend time at higher rpm's, or if you have a high-volume water pump.  That restrictor was there from the factory for a reason.

ill probably modify my elbow i bought. i can weld an extension onto it. i bought like 4 different elbows and i finally found one i liked/that fit well.

it's not the extension that's the big problem, it's the restrictor in the elbow.  The extension just keeps the heater core from sucking up air.

What the heck restrictor are you guys talking about? my 69 didn't have one that I know of when i rebuilt it, are 69's different?

and to replace the heater core you're going to have to pretty much remove that side of the dash to get the box out, then rebuild and put back in.

EDIT: I didn't see any steam in the video or anything, are you sure thats the clip of it grenading? and do you always film while driving? haha cool stuff tho

If you look at a factory heater elbow, it has a restrictor built into it at the output end.  For some reason they varied slightly between years, but to my knowledge all engines had one.
