built67 -> its on the road!!! (5/8/2008 8:40:00 PM)

ok so i finally got my 67 mustang on the road...its a coupe with a 289 and a c4. the brake lines rotted out bc it sat for a while so i had it flat bedded over to my house when i bought it...i did the entire brake system over, manual brakes with drums all around (great for stopping on a dime haha)... the lines are fully bled and so is the master and it runs, drives and stops but i have to push the brake pedal hard and deep...my friends dad told me to raise the brake pedal higher, i have to adjust the shoes out more. is this true?

Yeah, it probably wouldn't hurt. If they are too far from drums, it will take a lot of pedal. Did you change the shoes too? If so, I would drive it 5-10 miles (guess you already did that) then adjust the shoes out til they hit the drums and cause them to drag. Then back em off til they quit dragging.

basically it should be so that the shoes are permanently in contact (only so slightly) with the drum.
So when they're bled, every bit of pedal pressure will built up stopping power (pads going agains the drumm).
So if you have only one shoe a good bit away from the drum, all the pedal effort will be used to move the shoe to the drum. if that's a problem on 4 wheels you'kll have the pedal half down until it actyually starts stopping.

In any case: have someone who KNOWS brakes help you. it's too dangerous to play with
