Stangman70 -> 351w motor (5/8/2008 7:36:27 PM)

I have a 79 351w and I want to change the heads to have the engine breathe a little easier. I was wondering if by switching to 351c heads would I need to change the manifold as well? I am assuming that I would have to, but just wanted to make sure. Thanks!

351 windsor and 351 clevlands are different blocks

289    330
302    351
351    400

different familys

Yes, it's possible to put cleve heads on your motor, but it requires a little machine work and a custom intake, and it isn't really cost effective.  There are plenty of aftermarket windsor heads available that make the swap obsolete.

any suggestions for the swap? I am checked out both jegs and summit, and neither one seems very cost effective.

just port and polish your heads or get new ones. with a nice eldebrock intake and a holley.

you be breathing too much air.

AFR 185's would make it run really well with a mild build. A bigger build such as a stroker or a more potent 351 and AFR 205's would work. 185's would prolly be a better head in most street 351's.

a cheap alternative that would still perform would be to snatch up a set of GT40 heads, they can be gotten for a few hundred bucks plus a couple hundred for a valve job and resurface. figure 500-600 for a set all cleaned up and ready to go.

Yeh, the GT40 heads would be a cost effective solution.  You will not get great power from them, but they would probably be better than what you have.  Just keep in mind that the GT40 heads are ford stock heads from a later time so they are still not aftermarket performance heads.  Some good aftermarket options are AFR, Trick Flow, CHI, Dart, Brodix just to name a few.

I had a different set of heads put on my 351W to make it breath alittle better, but I cant remember the name of them now. Turbo something or another. They were from the 80's...
