Hello, I recently purchased my first Mustang. Many people have asked me since I bought it, "What size engine do you have?" They are talking about a three digit number. Its a '04 Mustang V6 3.9L... now, i've done some research and figured it to be a 286... Does that sound about right? Also, stock, approx. how much Horse Power is my baby pumping out?

286, no. The 4.6L V8 is only a 281. The 3.8L is a 232. I'm not sure what the 3.9L is, exactly, never really knew how to figure out the numbers myself.

This man is correct. You have a 3.9L which is the same as the old 3.8L but your crank is just slightly offset to bump it up to 3.9L. Stock your car makes 193hp at the flywheel and around 160hp to the rear tires.


3.9L's were only introduced in 04 and typically don't make any more power than the 3.8's as the displacement is so little that it doesn't affect power.

Actually... the 3.8L's have approx 150 HP while the 3.9L's have approx 193.

I'm so p*ssed... I have a 3.8L... a '98. One year off that extra 43 HP :(

Scott, the 43hp is from the single to splitport swap that ford did... they should have done that back in 94.. then maybe the 99-04s would be around 240 stock :/ too bad

Not necessarily, as they would probably have inproved the GT as well, can't have their sixxers competing with the GTs right off the sales floor...

I've done some research... and... uhhh... The only way a Sixxer will compete with a GT is with $4K+ into it. At least with a stock SN95 engine + Procharger S/C @ 11PSI

Yeah...not so much. The singleport (94-98) motors make around 130rwhp and the splitport motors (99-04) make around 160rwhp.

False again. It doesn't take 4k to beat on the 99-04 GT's. All your particular car needs is the splitport swap, a 75 shot fo nitrous, and a tune.

Well, I guess I didn't research well enough. I didn't even know about the splitport thing until after I posted this :P

Check your local boneyard for split-ports.

You do realize that pretty much only auto manufactures use crank HP and that's only because it allows an industry standard, right? Stick with citing rwhp numbers or you'll start to sound like a ricer.

3.9 was 2004 only. 99-03 still used the 3.8.

The 4.0 C o l l e c t i v e (google it) will be a great place for you gather info on 4.0 stuff. With a few boltons and a tune expect to make a little over 200rwhp and 230rwtq.

96-98 = 150bhp / 215tq Singleport
99-00 = 190bhp / 225tq Splitport without IMRC butterflies
01-03 = 193bhp / 225tq Splitport with IMRC butterflies
2004  =  193bhp Splitport with IMRC butterflies
05-08 = 210bhp / 240tq 4.0L Modular SOHC block
