They have less drive train power loss so a similarily set up manual driven by a very good driver will be faster every time. The catch is the very good driver; there aren't many out there, maybe 10% so the auto in practical terms will win more races. But the statement that the manual is faster is correct.

This is what i was getting at.  The auto is a better track car at the strip, no human will shift faster than a properly tuned auto.  And good drivers are limited.  On a road setup the manual will have the advantage but for the majority of drivers out there, an auto with same mods as a manual will probably win more than 50% at the strip

I can't do stick in my daily bumper-to-bumper commute, so I got an auto. Sure, I'd like a manual so I could control my shift points but it would be annoying as hell in my commute.

And an auto with a good tune is vastly faster at shifting than any human. So performance wise its the same.

I used to wish I had a manual, but since I went with the X, I am glad I have the auto.  The 5R55S is a bit sturdier than the T5 they put in the manual sixers.

The best driving experience is with a manual IMO.

I didn't even consider a car on the lot if it had auto.  I HAD to have manual and PP.  My first color choice was GO but I couldn't find one in manual so Torch Red it was   ....It's my DD and I've got about 14,300 glorious, fun-filled miles and continually rackin'em up!!!!

I really wanted a manual. I had to look a long time to even find one. It seems to me that they are few and far between. I just think that they are more fun to drive. I reall wanted a manual in yellow but, I looked for about 10 weeks and couldn't find one. So I Came across a black one ans jumped on it.  I think the guy freaked out a little when I just came up, bought it instantly, and didn't even bicker on the price. Shoulda seen his face, kind like WTF??? LOL. But, why is a manual faster? Because you can rev that sucker up to 5000 rpm's and side step that bad boy! Ummmm.. not...not that I ummm.. do that sort of thing.....often :)

OK so I'm a noob, but I gotta ask. Why would you lock or delete this thread. It's not like anybody is bashin anybody else's car. Transmission choice is one of the most important decisions you make when buying a car. I found it to be a very interesting (and well behaved) discussion about what makes our individual rides our own???? I like to hear why others got the cars they did.

Besides the manuel being faster it also gets better gas mileage. And should last longer.

Perhaps my manual isn't altogether practical. Then again, who exactly bought a Mustang because it was the most practical vehcile out there? Who bought a convertible because its was the most practical? The fact is, I like convertibles and I like a stick. When I found a barely used 07 Mustang conv. with the 5 speed, it was an easy choice.

Why is a manual faster?

From what I understand, some tests that were done by various car magazines found the manual transmission to be just a few seconds faster than an auto.
I agree with some posters here, if I had to drive the Mustang as my DD, I probably would have bought an auto. There are all kinds of reasons why we all bought what we did.

a few seconds faster??? sooo if the auto does the 1/4 mile in 15 ish seconds you are saying the manual does it in 12-13 seconds?!?!?!  LLLLLLLLOOOOOOOOOLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL

better think a little more nextime you decide to make a post

Excuse me.....a FEW TINTHS OF A SECOND FASTER. Also be careful of your sarcasm because it could prove Matt right!

I've owned "2" cars in the past that were automatics and the tranny blew out within 100 miles. (NOT a mustang) Ever since, I made a promise to myself that I would only buy a car that was a manual. On a plus side, the manuals are also less expensive when purchasing a vehicle. Also, I like the ability to down shift and be able pass people when needed, especially on the highway!

I am suprised to see how many automatics are on the poll. Good to know. ;-)

I got an automatic because I felt that an automatic transmission is much more high tech than a manual and makes commuting a lot easier.  I also do know that driving a manual Mustang is very fun.
