1966 C4 transmission expert needed.

classiccars -> 1966 C4 transmission expert needed. (5/7/2008 5:20:40 PM)

O.K. Before I start, I want to say that this may have been my fault. I'm new at the classic Mustangs game.
I picked up my '66 today and drove it home. (about 180 miles) When I got home I notice a trail of tranny fluid up my driveway. Not good!  After looking over the owner's manual, I see that I had the shifter in the first little dot. (Console shifter.) That seems to be the "Slippery Road", start off in second gear selection. I did notice that the tranny was only shifting once. (from second to high.)   O.K. here is my question. What did I do to the tranny? It looks like the leak was coming from the front by the flywheel and inspection cover area. I'm not sure if the front seal blow out because of some added pressure or what. Is there anything I should check or do at the point?   I added more fluid, but have not driven the car yet since it was parked.

sounds like its time for a front seal, which is a 5.00 part it just takes labor to pull the trans to do it (not as hard as you may think really). you didnt hurt anything except your acceleration times by starting in 2nd btw [;)]

If the front seal is bad, where can I find the correct seal? Can just this seal be bought? Or does it just come in a seal kit? Any current part numbers would be a great help.
Once I drop the transmission, Is the seal easy to replace from the outside? Any tips?
Thanks Ken

My Mustang did the same thing.  It really had not been used too much for a while before I bought it and the transmission started leaking when I started driving it.  A local shop that does work on classic Mustangs is going to pull the transmission and replace all the seals for $350.  I drove mine on the wrong dot too.  Common mistake but harmless.  Not related to the leak.

yes you can buy the seal all by itself, from any local auto parts store, for like 5 dollars.

you could be lucky and its only the seal or it could be a cracked front pump.

seal....once the trans is out it needs to be drained and then stood up on its tailshaft. undo the front bolts from the pump and pull the front pump. sometimes the front pump is in there pretty tight. once its out then replace the seal and reinstall.

I wouldn't suggest doing it yourself- you could remove the trans and take the trans to a trans shop for them to do it.

Also look at the conv hub. Make sure it is does not have a grove worn in it. If so the new seal will not fix problem. The front sead is the same seal for a C4, C6, AOD, FMX, E4OD. If the parts store tells you they don't have one for that old of  car get one for a 87-93 Mustang, 5.0.  ''

And I own a shop to and I help people alot with DIY problems.
