Just a question

someone told me to put bigger gears in my rear-end and it won't hum and it would give me a faster pick-up. Because my gears i guess are shot because my car hums when i'm just coasting not when i give it gas but i'm not even sure if thats what it has to do with it. i need a better opinion because i dunno if the person that told me this knows what their talking about lol. I need someone that know what their talking about

RE: Just a question

Well...if you go to a shorter gear, or a bigger number (i.e. from a 2.73 gear to a 3.55, 3.73, 4.10, etc) your car will feel stronger off the line, but at the expense of some mileage. As for the humming though, it will depend on the gears, their condition, if they are installed correctly, etc.

Humming from gears? Its probly just road noise. lol.

Shorter gears will give you more acceleration, but the motor will be running higher RPM's on the highway giving you ****tier gas mileage.

RE: Just a question

The ring and pinioncould beworn on one side of the gears (which is why you only hear it when you coast, way too much clearance),To check the gearsremove the rear cover(chances are there won't be alot of oil in it, the usual culprit), if the teeth have any knife edges on them their done, also plan on replacing all the bearings (including the axle bearings, and seals). A bad bearing could also do the same thing though. You won't know untill you open it up and start looking.
