Hey everyone,

I am new to the forum, but my wife has 1969 Mustang that has been sitting for a little while.  It used to be her daily drivers, but the car began slipping out of gear when it was at idle. I am curious, with the experience of those on this forum, is that just a transmission problem or could it be an engine issue all together. I am trying to figure out, with just that working knowledge - not knowing the potentially other issues the engine might have - if its just the transmission i might have to replace to get her running....and then i will look at the cost on that.  Thanks for your help.

That should just be a trans problem. The engine should not affect it staying in gear. I am not a mechanic so someone  may be able to give a more thorough answer

my wifes 70 would do that when it was low on fluid. it finally broke a band and is in the tranny shop right now. should have it back tomorrow. a rebuild should cost you under $500.00 with new torque converter. what ever you do don't get one from checker, idiots and the cost is through the roof, $700.00. besides they will send something wrong, like the shifter linkage will be wrong or the torque converter wont match, thats what they did to me. there really not a high dollar tranny, and pretty simple to rebuild. you could try to adjust the bands but they usually brake after that.

What would happen is you would stop at a light and when you would try and drive again the gas would respond as if it was in neutral. Then, you would have to play with the shifer, go up into neutral and back into drive and eventually it would catch again. Hope this helps.

On a side note, this was the reason that my wife stopped driving the car, bu it has sat for a good while now, so its possible it has other issues. I know for a fact the tires are shot, but thats an easy replacement. I am not sure if the car has spark or not. The last time someone tried to turn it on, it wouldn't turn over.

Low on fluid.  Don't over think the problem.

Well, that was the problem when my wife stopped driving the car a few years ago (yes, I said years).  Now, it wont start at all, which could still be related to fluids or as I understand, spark.  Any suggestions on this.  Its not a dead battery or anything like that.  Not the starter because it attempts a quick turn, but never turns over.  Thanks for all the help so far.

I guess before you can check the tranny fluid level, you probably need to get it running. After sitting for a few years, you'll probably have a few other issues. Engines don't like to be left that long.

What happens when you turn the key? Does the engine turn over at all or does the starter just engage? If that's the battery that was left in it when it was parked, it's probably very weak.

Also hard seals are very common on a car that has been sitting. And that $500 could be go either way. Depends on what all is torn up.
