ORIGINAL: Juztang We've been thinking about leasing a BMW for a while now. We go through vehicles like crazy and leasing makes more sense to me. You know, I've grown with my parents always buying cars, and never new cars, so I knew nothing about leasing. After I read up on it a little it really sounded like the best plan for me. I'm trying to save for a house, so that way I can save more money, and since I never hang on to cars for very long (hell, I had my Cobra for about 6 months). As long as you don't screw it up, everything should be alright. Take a look into it, it might be perfect for you.

I was talking about in terms of mods, not really the factory parts. My buddy bought a Audi TT without realizing how much they are to mod. $1,000 just for a tune.

Oh, yeah, well there are a bunch of options for the tune, from the simple ones that take a lot of wiring to do yourself for just a few hundred, up to the Dinan flash for something like $2000. But when you really think about it, how much less does your mustang cost to tune? Once you buy the tuner and have someone tune it on a dyno a few times, you're at at least $500 or so probably. I think my current price list is around $3000 including tune, wheels, grill, body stuff, and a few other bits and pieces. I owe around $2000 still on my GT so I was thinking if I sell it for about $5000 (maybe, low milage, good condition) then I could cover just about all of it. At least that's the plan.

Sweet, sounds like a good plan. I see your point but you can also use the Xcal2 for another vehicle. I purchased my Xcal2 for my 2006 F150, sold it, and now use it on my Mustang. So I only paid $150 for the dyno tuning.

(Well, not the Dinan tune, but one of the chip tunes, not flashes) I fully plan on selling mine when my lease is up. Certainly can't turn it in like that.

Ooo, good information. I didn't know that. I wonder if that's the same in the Audis.

ORIGINAL: ThumperMX113 Ooo, good information. I didn't know that. I wonder if that's the same in the Audis. I dunno how the Audis work or what kind of tune it is, but possibly. For the BMWs, there are two main tunes, a flash (Dinan) or a piggyback (many different companies). To flash the ECU you'd have to know the checksums and encryptions to unlock the ECU and get it to read your unsigned code. That being the case, no one really knows how Dinan got the information they have to make flashes. That's their little secret. The piggybacks are just circuitry that goes in the ECU. It will intercept one signal wire, and send whatever it wants instead. It'll tell the ECU that there are different elevations or temperatures, etc, to trick the ECU into running higher boost, fuel management, etc. Since the BMW engine is has so much less to tune compared to the number of mods people have on Mustangs, there really isn't much need for individual dyno tunes, though now that more mods are coming out, more maps are coming out for the tunes, as well as a supposedly user customizable tuner. It's a completely different setup than I'm used to coming from the Mustang world, but at the same time it's kind of nice for it to be so simple. I've already had a Cobra, so no matter what tune I do on a 335, it's still not going to compare, so I'm really not worried about every ounce of power. Still though, the stock computer runs low boost to give a little more power with basically no turbo lag. Turn it up a little and you'll actually start utilizing the turbos and you can go from 300 BHP to about 330 RWHP with just a tune, 350+ RWHP by adding catless pipes and maybe an intake. Oh hell, who am I kidding. I'm going to dump every penny I have into it to try to make it as fast as possible. Still, even stock it will run away from an S197 GT, so I'm happy with that to start.
