Ok so, I don't really feeling like wasting time with all the basic courses at school so I'm thinking about going for A+ classes and maybe some networking classes. Anyone know what kind of money is out there for IT certifications in these areas? I assume it's pretty good when you look at the exponential growth of tech. I've always been an IT person and wanted to see how far these would get me provided I get hired on by a good company.

I asked the question here a while ago, and basically the answers were, "A+ sucks" or "CISCO certs are the only worthwile ones" "etc."

I'm going to get the ccna cert this summer(from the ccna 1-4 courses...half way through 4 now @ college)...idk about the A+ yet.

I thought about going for both. I mean I wish I could just chill out and take my basic courses like every other lucky child that has mommy and daddy taking care of things...but I can't I want to go to work making good money ASAP.

why not get both if you have the $$.

Ah, I should probably stop trying to find short cuts and go to college full time. It will pay off later on.

A++ or C++ something like that?? i forget... i'm in the Air Force, and a few guys take those courses all the time, but they fast track them.... 2 guys i work with have some kind of Microsoft expert certification. Too much work though---- Just do ITT

The A+ cert is, honestly, a joke. I got my A+ without studying when I was a sophmore in highschool... and its looked at in the industry as a very basic starting point. It may be required for some very basic jobs (working on a call center or geek rescue type places) but other than that its resume fluff.

Your CCNA on the otherhand is a major certification almost on the level of a bachelors degree in the way many (but far from all) company's view it. A CCNA + Experience will get you a higher salary or atleast equal salary to a Bachelors and no experience. Its honestly the only certification to waste your time taking classes for. If you arent very computer literate or technical, start with your CCENT. Is a new cert cisco put out for entry level techs. Get that, a job on the side, and keep working twords your CCNA, and you can pick up experience and a good cert.

+1, Java blows. I wouldn't touch it with a 10 foot pole.

And yes, A+ is worthless. CCNA and MCSE are what you should spend your time on.

I wouldn't bother going to class(es) for A+ certification. if you have half a brain and can focus your studying and have some general knowledge of PC hardware and windows OS you can self study and just pay to take the test. That's what I did.

As for Cisco or MCE/MCSE what is your goal? You will find that many companies that have a world-wide network of offices interconnected will use CIsco. If most of their locations are autonomous, they will tend to use MS servers as Cisco systems are more expensive and less cost effective for single installs.

I wasn't going to take the class and just study up and take the test, but I went ahead and took the class. Good thing we didn't spend more than 2 hours a week in there (6hr class) cause even that was too much. I didn't do jack crap in there and still averaged 95's on the tests. O well 6 credit hours for doing not much.

I also took the class for the first of four MS Server 2003 test 70-290 I think. I'm taking the next one next semester. I don't know if/when I'll take the exams cause I'm not sure what I want to do yet. Just taking a bunch of everything right now.

I took that server class but it was just one semester..didnt take the certification exam though.. ive actually got some study material pm me if you want it

dont mean to hijack the thread but does anyone know anything about security + certification?

A+ is a decent place to start if you have little experience. However, it won't get you much further than Geek Squad. In the "real world," A+ isn't worth a whole lot.
