Bye Bye FMX

Ok, so i currently have an FMX trans that came with my 72 and while I'd really like to keep it seeing as how they can be kinda rare to have or find, I'm finding myself conflicted because i want a nice simple aftermarket shifter installed and I haven't found even one for the FMX. Not to mention the availability of parts for it. Now, on the other side of the garage I have a nice C6 trans that I could drop in and there are plenty of nice aftermarket shifters for it that i have found and parts seem to be much easier to come by. But, then i would have to shorten the driveshaft. Would it be worth it almost to drop in the C6 instead of keeping the FMX? Has anyone here had their driveshaft shortened and about how much did it cost? Anyone want the FMX? lol

I'm sorry, I meant would I need to have the driveshaft worked on, anyone gone from an FMX to the C6 on here?

if you are going to go through the effort, put in an aod or a 4r70w instead

Lokar has a shifter that will work with the FMX

edit: I forgot to mention that years ago a friend of mine made a B&M shifter work with a FMX. As I recall, he had to make a bracket to mount the cable and an arm to go on the transmission. I remember he had to screw around with it to get it to work right, but once he got it, it worked just like you would expect.

Yeah i had seen the Lokar one but it doesnt have the gear indicator on it and I was lookin for one maybe along the lines of a hurst shifter with the T-handle. Maybe somthin with cable linkage so i could move it back on the tunnel so it's at more of a comfortable reach. Thank you though. I wonder if there would be someway to do that with the Lokar one...hmmm....

if i was gonna do anything id be doing an overdrive swap or at the minimum a c4

I agree with snorulz.
It's not 1979 anymore. The C6 is a nice box but with the price of fuel going up and newer, efficientproducts available today, you should consider the 4R70W.
You already have the correct flexplate on your engine. A shortened and balanced driveshaft should still be less than $100.
Shifters and supporting electronics are available.
