Transmission Identification - 5/6/2008 10:43:46 PM

I am trying to determine the type of transmission I have in my '88 LX. According to the Vehicle Identification and Certification label I have a 5 speed overdrive transmission. However my car was in an accident before I bought the car and I am uncertain to the extent of the damage, so I do not know if this transmission is the original transmission. I didn't think that 4 cylinders had T-5 transmissions, but when I had my clutch replaced a couple of years ago the guy said that my T-5 was in good condition. I was wondering if there was some kind of decoder to tell me what kind of transmission I have. Here is what is on the metal tag on the tranny. 13-62-182    77519 11173    E7ZR 7003 AA REP-AP. I am not certain about the "E7ZR" as it was difficult to read. Is there any place I can find out what these numbers mean? I have searched high and low for some kind of decoder or chart, but have not had any luck.

My main objective behind this is to find out what kind of oil/fluid I need to put in it as the manual states that all transmissions take 85W/90 gear oil except for the T-5OD. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

You may have to call or email the company. I searched all of the files I have on T5's (which is a sh*t load) & asked my friend who rebuilds t5's & sells them. No where could I find a mention of 13-62 starting code & he had never heard of them. He said all he knows about is 13-52.

I did see 13-52-182 in two of the files I have on my computer & a book I have on my shelf about rebuilding t5's. All said 13-52-182 was a gm transmission though... not sure if that helps though because you said it was a 13-62 code... I'd say email them or call. Could be a new case on it... or a new transmission from the factory, granted i have a list of the newer ones it's possible it could have came out after my information....

Hope that helps.

Thank you for looking into this, I obviously couldn't find anything on this code either. There is a code stamped onto the transmission itself that is 13-52-088-519, and right above that is Borg Warner R3 but everything I find about that says that it was never released. Does this possibly mean that the 13-62 is just not a T-5 and is only a generic transmission? When you say call the company, do you mean call Ford?

Thanks again for your help.

87-93 2.3 mustangs had either the T-5 or the A4LD.

You definately have a T-5.   The difference is that the 4cyl T-5's were rated at 240 ft/lbs, while the 5.0 was rated for 320 or so.

Great, thank you for the clearification! Now for my next question, which oil/fluid should I use? Should I use Deron II or Mercon ATF? Also just to double check, this is automatic transmission fluid right? It just seems kind of odd.

Thanks again.

No i meant borg warner. If it's their stamp they're the ones to ask.

There were alot of different 4 cylinder & v8 t5's & alot of them were rated at different tq ratings. The factory v8's were rated anywhere from 265-310 ft/lbs depending on year & car. The 4 cylinders were 235-250 depending on year & car

it is right.
if it's world class use mercon dexron III atf. If its not use gear oil. Chances of it not being a world class are slim to none though.

you sure it isn't 162 instead of 182?  that would make a whole helluva lot more sense according to my T5 chart as that would mean you've got the stock 87-88 T5

That's what I was thinking too at first, but the 62 is confusing me
All of mine say 13-52-162 for the 87-88

Yes, it was a bit difficult to read the numbers, I had to change some of the numbers a couple of times, so I will check them again in the morning. In the mean time, does anyone have a phone number right off hand for Borg Warner? I checked their website but none of the directories seemed to fit my inquiry. If not I will just try one of their main numbers again tomorrow as they were closed when I tried today.

Thanks again.

Ok, feel'n pretty stupid now, it is 13-52-162. I did finally get a hold of someone at Tremec to double check (even though you guys already nailed it). Below is the phone number if it will benefit anyone else. My next question though is how do I determine if it is a world class? Also the E7ZR 7003 AA REP-AP matches that of a four cylinder T-5, would I still use the ATF or should I use the gear oil? Maybe I will drain a little oil out and see what color it is.

Thanks again for you time.

I pulled out the top bolt on the tranny and stuck my finger in it. The oil looks and feels similar to motor oil although it has a yellowish tint. I am guessing that this means there is gear oil in it right now, am I right? It also seems pretty clean so I am wondering if it is even a good idea to change it. What do you guys think? Also, if it is suppose to have the ATF in it, then how would one go about cleaning it out properly as to not contaminate the ATF with the gear oil?

Thanks again for your input.
