View Full Version : PI Torque Converter, single vs multi disc ?

hello all,

Ok I am in the market for a torque converter, have heard enough about the TCI Streetfighter (re-worked stock) torque converter and decided to go with Precision Industries , how big a difference is there between their single disc and the multi disc model?

Is the PI single disc like the TCI, a re-worked stock unit, or a brand new part, is the multi-disc worth the extra $300 ? They both have a 2 year warranty so what is the harm in getting the single disc unit? When I supercharge I won't be doing insane boost levels, just enough to get me 400 RWHP/RWTQ, so basically sell me on the multi disc, what exactly does it have to offer over the single disc? I am looking at 3200 stall rpm.

thanks

As I understand it, a multi-plate TC will allow the converter to "hold" under high power levels, such as cars that are super- or turbocharged. Hopefully someone can explain this a little better than I can. At any rate, I have the PI multi-plate unit with a 3,000 stall. Had it for about 2 months with a naturally aspirated engine, and it seems like I get a little more torque and power transmitted to the rear wheels with it. But, I'll be putting on my Whipple this week, which is why I got it in the first place.

PI multidisc @3,500 here.

Get the multidisc, you wont have to worry anymore of the TC, this thing is bulletproof.

You have to call PI and get the part #. They told me they don't have it listed on their website. I would give ST motorsports a call for PI converters good source.

600 !!! thats like almost 8 hours of labor @ $80 an hour, ridiculous

There is a very reputable shop near me that only does performance transmissions, they will install a torque converter onmy GT for $350-400...............he said it is really not as difficult as most shops will make it out to be, he has installed about3 of these PI multi discs so far...

I am very confident he knows what he is doing and I am lucky to be close, bybye tax rebate check !! I am going with the PI Multi Disc.

lol you think that's bad..there is this one (and I really do mean ONE lol) shop that charges
$150 an hour [&:].They tried telling it was going to be about $2k just for gears and TC install,
they asked me what I thought ... I left them with a dial tone.

The dealership really IS the only place in town that will do the job for a reasonable
ammount plus they will still honor warranty since they are doing the install.

Can't wait for the mods but the install is really breaking my wallet.[:'(][:'(][:'(]

I'm looking into getting a PI Torque Converter with a 3000 Stall Speed for my currently NA Mustang GT with 3.73 Gears.

1.) Should I get a multi-disc in case I go with the Whipple FI in the coming years or would this hurt driveability on a NA car?

2.) I obviously want a lower 1/4 mile but, what differences (positive and negative) in daily driving should I expect...
And in inclement weather?

3.) Is this the best brand torque converter to purchase for our cars?

4.) What stall speed would you recommend for my application?

I'm definately do NOT want a trans brake or anything too serious.

^^

how do you like your 3.73s and a torque converter? ;)

I only have 3.73 Gears and love them.

I got a 1 piece aluminum driveshaft installed at the same time so it's hard for me to tell the difference with the gears alone.

I do not have an aftermarket torque converter.

I purchased a Whipple HO Kit instead so the torque converter I will have to get later.

What stall speed would be recommended for a FI daily-driver?

How did it go I'm very curious and what tips could you give about it?

Yes, updates please. I guess if you're not running too much power then a single disc converter is fine. I heard to stay away from off the shelf brands though...

So far, Precision Industries is getting HIGH PRAISES...

I did get the PI SIngle disc with a 3000 rpm stall. I havent driven my car much but I did take it out to the track the same day I got it back from the shop. It launched much harder! Only problem was that now I break traction pretty bad off the line (running on street tires). I am running slower times than before it went in because of it. I should be getting some drag radials in the near future. I'll update a little bit more once I get to drive it some more. So far I have noticed nothing negative. It doesn't roll off a stop like it did with the stock one. It does feel like it has a little bit more torque off the line, but its just a SOTP feeling.
