Default Fuel Gauge

The fuel gauge stays up past full and then will drop down to about half within a minute all the sudden, and from there less then 10m of driving will bring it down to empty, in which i have an unknown amount of fuel left since I haven't filled it all the way up in a long time.

It's been like this since I bought the car, but I barely drove it until recently. I checked both the grounds and one seemed good, and the other seemed very sketchy so i drilled a hole and grounded it well. Same thing still happens. I'm new to fixing or working on cars so any advice would be great.

This is my first car and I've been making decent progress on it so far I think.
so far I
- put new black steel doorhandles on.(The passenger side was broken anyways)
- Put new door speakers in, + new covers.
- New stereo.
- Fixed door lock switch.
- Installed alarm system.
- Fixed the cooling fan, sort of. It didn't turn on at all, It got home fine about 35m from where I bought it, and the next day i take it to get smogged and it overheats at the end. Not sure why the fan wasn't turning on since I couldn't figure it out, but when I jumped it, it would turn on. So I ended up wiring it to my ignition so when i turn the car on the fan turns on and it seems to be working well.
- Replaced the headliner with a kit.
- put one new molding peice on that was missing.
- put new wiper grill on, since the plsatic black one was cracked and I liked the style of one that I saw.
- Fixed A/C
thats all I can think of for now, not that it's really relevent to my question, just felt like listing it.

Default RE: Fuel Gauge

Try getting your voltage from the sender. I'll put money on it being bad or the wires to it being bad

I'll double check tomorrow, but I have a question first. Why is there two sending units anyways? Wouldn't having just one work?

One is the fuel pump, the other is the sending unit itself

How do I know which wires go to which one then? In the wiring diagram it labels them both as sending units.

Thanks for the help; again I'm new at this
