Mach 460 - I want to hook up a sub....

alexplantman -> Mach 460 - I want to hook up a sub.... (5/6/2008 9:33:16 AM)

I just got my '04 GT this wknd and based on what I have read here I have a Mach 460. I have an old, but unused Kicker Solobaric 10" in a sealed box from a few years ago , which I ran off a Fosgate amp.

In my case now, I want to keep all the Mach system intact and just add an amp and Sub. What size amp could I get that would be compatible with the factory stereo and my sub? I can just get a mono amp if it's better since I am not hooking anything else to it, right? I saw a thread on "which is best", so I am not going there, LOL... I can't afford the best now anyway, but any particular brands that might work well for this application and priced reasonable (not macintosh price range :D )?

System sounds great the way it is now, but I am afraid the factory speakers are going to blow sooner or later, at least where the base is coming out of.. Should I be concerned or can they handle it?

thanks

well the amp really depends on what your sub is and it's specs, but it does need to have a built in crossover so it can filter out signal from the stock headunit.  do a search for whats called a "data cable" and this is a good spot to tap into to get a signal for your amp, thats what I did and it works great.

LOC spliced into rear speaker wires under seat, RCA's to amp, done.

I think you only need 500 watts TOPS for that sub (someone correct me if wrong....)  which would allow a LOT of amplifiers under $200.

+1 on the Line out converter.

+2 on line output converter. thats what i did. I have 1 12" and it sounds great

When you guys say "rca's out" , we're talking about running the rca's to the radio or to the line output converster? Am I going to have to go behind the dash :( ?

I went to local stereo shops and they suggsted a Kicker mono amp 2x300.1, i think is the model #... It was $200 and change... mid $200, I think... Anyway on ebay they are all over the place for a $100 or less (yes, no warranty, I imagine) ... seems like a pretty good deal to me...

Any thoughts on that Kicker ?

you will get no warranty on the internet purchase.  Kicker is one of the worst to letting its gear on the net and if you read the conditions of those places carefully they normally have more then a few ways to get around their "warranty" if they want to.

As for pesonal opinion for kicker I don't hate it but I have not and do not plan on owning it.  Their subs tend to be inefficient, which draws more power from their ineffiecint amps.  They do not sound bad when the electrical system can handle it but I like other stuff that is not in every ebayr's trunk.

The rca cables are a low level signal cable.  They normally go between the deck and the amp and carry the unamplified signal.  Stock steroes never have rca outputs so you have to use another gizmo(the technical name) called a Line Out Converter(or LOC) that will take the speaker level signal that the factory radio puts out, and knock it down to the low level rca signal that the amp takes.  The advantage to this system is that you keep the factory radio(not a great thing in fords).  The bad side is they tend to be a little noisier signal because anytime you amplify a signal you inject noise into it.  So what happens then is that the factory signal tends to be noisey already, which then goes into your amp and once again gets amplified.  If the loc is installed properly you will not hear any noise but an loc singal will never be as clean as an aftermarket system that is properly wired.
