i bought an alienware back in the day, stupidest ****ing thing ever.  3000 dollar pile of crap.  had a defective hard drive from the start.  thing got so hot the paint wore off it within a month.  eventually it got so hot it would turn itself off.  DO NOT BUY A GAMING LAPTOP!  I built the desktop I'm on for 1700 bucks, including price of a 22" screen and everything.  Runs cooler, quieter, and its much faster.  DO NOT BUY A GAMING LAPTOP!  The battery in a gaming laptop pretty much lasts long enough for you to boot up the game, but thats about it.  Remember, all that **** takes a lot of power.  It's totally not worth it.  DO NOT DO NOT DO NOT!

gaming laptop sounds like an oxymoron to me.

...yeah....

why not a regular desktop?

Commander Bubbles -> RE: Gaming Laptop (5/6/2008 12:42:04 PM)

two words that are just not meant to be.

Laptops are only useful for transportational needs (work). Gaming might seem like a cool idea, but trust me...just get a desktop. Laptops generally run worse than desktops anyway (hd rpm's, cpu's, ram, etc..)

Just get a 1500$ gaming PC and a 1000 laptop.

Another few points...

-Your laptop will not run @ full performance when running from the battery=1/2 the fps compared to if the A/C adapter was plugged in.
-Refresh/response rates are generally poorer than pc monitors.=mouse lag...
-Generally slower than PCs, no matter what
-No/little upgradability.
-Overheating issues (surfaces)
-If something goes bad (usb port, etc)...you can't just swap it out...live with it. You could get a hub or something, but...

Seriously, the idea may seem good, until you get the laptop and want to throw it out. Not only new games are bad to play, but older ones (quake 2/3, ut99, ut2k4 are examples). The idea of playing new games on the go is retarded too...just do what I said a paragraph above.

Sager all the way if you want a good gaming laptop.  But, Bubs is right, Laptops make poor gaming computers unless you dump cash into them!
