so i e mailed pony carburetors yesterday, and today i got this responce.

Message: Hi, I recently bought an aoutolite 4100 that i am rebuilding
and I
was wondering what sortr of process do you use/ recomend for restoring
the
main body and other metal parts?
thanks,
Joel

and what did they say?

Any info that we are willing to give out is shown in our virtual tour
on our
website. We are not in the practice of giving advice on how to rebuild
your
carb yourself, because that is what WE do.

i understand the angle they are coming from, but COME ON! i shouldnt have said i HAVE one already and just acted curious...  haha

I called and left them a voicemail. never heard back. that was sign enough of my lack of interest in their company. two days later i walked into RAMCHARGERS and bought a brand new edelbrock.

yea, I got an attitude ( not the fiorst time either)when I called to buy a rebuild kit and also the stuff for the power valve on an auto lite 1100,,,clown guy gave me the 3rd degree about screwing up the float level when I never touched the float to begin with,, all I wanted was a friggen rebuild kit and a couple of parts,,, personally they may be the place to buy a correct carb ,,,but like a good looking gal ,,their sh**t still stinks, like everyone else,,have since started to look for a replacement elsewhere cause of the clown affect when I call

They are overpriced, I saw them at a show last year, giving a "workshop" at their display, Im pretty sure they just read how to rebuild a carb in a haynes book and set up shop, some of the stuff they were saying was just all wrong about the induction processes. Anyways just go to a local parts store and get a rebuild kit, I believe you can even get a rebuild kit from the parts counter at a ford dealership for the 2100, 4100, and 4300. As for cleaning, I usually just dissasemble, run it over with engine degreaser and some hot water, carbs arent hard to clean at all. After that just use the rebuild kit and follow instructions and your done.

I bought some parts from them and found them to be friendly helpful and they shipped my parts quickly. Sounds like I am the exception.

no. not the exception. I needed a few parts from them as well (heat riser and those two plastic parts), quick&easy deal.
Some parts you can only get from them as they seem to be the only ones 2 still manuifacture them. So from that it's not just rebuilding they do.

The few minutes I listened it was all about a/f ratio and how the choke works, he said that at full load an engine makes max power because it gets richer the more you load, in actuallity the max power same with max efficiency a/f ratio at full load is slightly leaner like 12.0 at idle 12.3 at full load than at no load or idle, I dont recall fully what he said about the choke so I wont quote him but needless to say, it wasnt anything i learned in 4 years of engineering classes.

I contacted them one time, and the winch on the other end of the phone made it quite evident there would be no need to call them ever again.  I don't give a hoot how good they think they are. . . there is no need to treat your customers like crap.

RGMotorsports, Jon has forgotten more about rebuilding and setting up carbs then you probably know. I will agree, sometimes they are not the most friendly people on the phone, but they have a great product that works right out of the box.

They had spent 2 hours on the phone with me trying to correct a problem, and that tells me a little bit about the company.

As far as the original poster, why would you expect them to give out thier hard earned education.

Bottom line, they do a nice carb, and most people who have bought thier carbs will tell you how satisified they are with the product, thier customer support and how well it runs right out of the box.

^ i was mostly asking out of curiousity, buffing, blasting hot tanking? ect. im not expecting them to tell me in detail, i get that they want to single out their service. but i DONT think they would go out of business if they made public what process they use. if a company keeps things from me, i get suspicious.

it mostly just gets to me how rude they responded.

i already have a carb, cleaner and a dremel haha. if they want to shoot themselves in the foot w/ new potential customer, thats their loss.

I don't see their return as rude.  You're asking them how to do the job that they make a living doing.  If I worked at an auto shop, I sure as hell wouldn't give repair advice to every random person that walked in.  That's just not good business sense.

That said, they are overpriced.  They cater more to the restoration crowd than Joe Blow who just wants a carb that works.  I forget exactly what they charge for a rebuilt 4100, but it's significantly more than the $80 or so you'll spend on a rebuildable unit on ebay, $20 on a carb kit, and 2 hours of your time.  2100/4100 carbs are about the most simple carb on the face of the planet, and nobody should be intimidated trying to rebuild one.

Now, if you're in the market for a factory correct, show quality replacement carb, you're going to call them.  They do a very good job at this and they know it, and they charge you for it.

And they want to keep it secret, so don't ask or else!  off with yer head!

Except they do a whole hell of a lot more than that.  If you want to know how to rebuild a carb, buy the carb kit; it comes with instructions.

Yeah, that's not information I'd expect them to give out.  Again, that's how they make their money.

When I called, they were a little snotty ... but I received a quality product even if the price was a little high.

granted that they are in business to make money, they dont have to capitalize WE.

thats just not courteous at all.

if they responded "we read your letter with great interest and wish we could help, but our company policy keeps us from disclosing our production processes."

i think that this post would never exist. its not about whether or not they should have to discuss internal process is one thing. the fact that they responded in an alienating way is not good business manners.

and thats just basic high school business class or working at a Publix  super market for a couple of months.
