Hi guys, I would like to know when does a engine needs a rebuild and what is the process of rebuilding an engine? what kind of tools is required? Can it be done by yourself? Anything useful would be really apreciated.
When it's blowing lots of smoke & or leaking oil & or making nasty not-normal noises & down on power.
You need lots of specialized tools to rebuild an engine, sure it's do-able at home in a garage, But after the rebuild,, what are you gonna do with all those used-once tools? lol
If you've never yet swapped out an intake manifold or a water pump or something like that then you're not ready to rebuild a whole engine
well you dont need to rebuild an engine if its leaking oil..but if your getting a knocking sound, or losing compression in cylinders, blowing smoke out the exhaust, these are signs of engine failure, engine building isnt rocket science but if your not mechanically inclined it can be one in the same
Ok cool. But do you change every pieces or only some of them? do you need to extract your engine from the hood? what kind of work is done when rebuilding a engine?
Yes, the Engine needs to be extracted from teh car. It depends on teh condition of the parts to see if they need to be replaced or not. They have to be measured to see if tey fall into specs. Some times everything needs to be changed but the engine block other times only a few things, Just all depends on what is gonna be used for. Somethings can be reconditioned. Usualy the cylinders need to be bored and the deck might need to be cut straight.

just did it to my 03 mach 1, and it wasn't so bad, but it was a long process, and we did it pretty fast. for my 93 5.0 i bought a remanufactured long block, and modded.
