I have a 2001 Mustang V6.  Had to gut the cats due to a fuel pump that went bad a wrecked them out on me.  Well now it will not pass freaking Cali smog.  Is there an aftermarket setup on the Cats that I can use to pass emissions here?????  Stock replacements range from $800-$1300 bucks.

I am not against going Duals or high flow cats or whatever.  But I just need to know if I have options, or if I am just screwed.  I can get it to pass a visual not a prob, just has to pass the sniffer.....

did you buy the car with the california emissions package or not?
or do you know, if you dont i can look up your vin and tell you.
The cats are a lot cheaper for the cars that didnt have the california emissions package.

Yes, it was a Cali car.  Originally sold here.  What is the difference in the cats, that the sniffer can tell?

not for sure on that fact i know some cars still have the option when you order them!!!!
As far as cats california has more strict sniffer requirements therefore not just any cheap cat will work. For example what other states like Arizona require a cat is a cat and will pass, but might not in cali.

Exactly the problem I am having.  There has to be someone in Cali that has replaced their stock cats with something that worked (if available) and can give me a little help...... There are so many out there that are 49 state legal, and I am wondering if it is really a sniff issues, or a wording in our stupid a$$ lawmakers.....

i can talk to my friend later tonight and see i know he did aftermarket stuff on a honda with a completely different engine than what the car came with and used a cat that i recall was universal and under $200 bucks and it passed cali emissions no problems. Ill find out what he used.

There has got to be someone either from Cali that has done this, or someone out there knows someone.  My car is parked, and that is just abuse of a Stang to be sitting there dreaming of the road......

This is all you need to do.

Find a stock H-pipe from a 1994 or 1995 Cobra and have a shop modify the flanges to fit the stock manifolds.

My 95' GT BBK X-pipe was modified for $70 dollars.

You should also be able to use any 96-04 GT factory catted H-pipes.

You can find stock ones that people are selling for under $400 dollars and somtimes really cheap.

Bassani sells CA legal cats for $80 each I think.

Also if I remember correctly, you only need two cats (Between the O2 sensors, not behind the rear two.)

This is what I would recommend doing.

Also, your fuel pump going bad will NOT cause your cats to go bad.

Yep, even finding stocker Cats at a low enough price is a bit difficult.  But knowing I only need two will help.
