Got the mustang back on the road about a week ago. I forgot how much fun it is to drive!! I also forgot about all the people who stop and stare as you're cruising down the road. Is it just me or does this get irritating sometimes? I mean, i was drivng down a pretty busy road yesterday and it didn't matter how fast or slow i went there would be people who insisted on riding my bumper, and driving right along side me on both sides, this wouldn't bother me so much except for the fact that they were looking at me, and my car and not the road! I'm just scared one of these days someone is going to take to long of a look and nail me.. What are your guys opinions?

I get a lot of comments from people...everything from "great car" to "what year is that "

It seems like everyone has a story about a late 60's model Stang they owned when they see yours.

I have not had any problems with people watching me instead of the road however.

Last weekend i was cruising and came to a nasty area of us-23 where everyone always seems to come to a complete stop... for no real reason, on a 70mph freeway!

so we get into it, and are moving maybe 15mph, bumper to bumper traffic and a Toyota Sequoia SUV pulls up next to me full of kids maybe 18-19, and they had their window down staring at me. /i finally gave them the time of day and looked over.

The driver yells out "Wanna trade?"

my response:

"Why would I trade something that gets me pu**y for something that makes me look like one?"

lol at waffle's comment

In My Fox, i dont really get compliments, but i LOVE it when i take off from a stopsign in a residential area, and theres some bitch up ahead walking, and they just turn around and stare at me until im out of sight, what i do when that happens, right before im out of sight, i rev the thing to 6k

i dont drive the mach much, but ive heard/gotten nice car/thumbs up while i was riding shotgun

but by far, i got the most attention in the chevelle when it ran. in ONE 2 minute trip to the store, i got 3 thumbs up, 5 people staring at my car, and 3 nice cars. and then i got cut off [:@] but then proceded to pass the guy with that 454 a roarin

i usually get lots of head turns, "nice car", and "is that yours?"

I love every minute of it, can't wait to get it out of storage once the ground dries up

I get lots of "How much are you selling it for" and as gas stations there is always some guy who wants to come impart me with his knowledge of exahust systems and how my exhuast being dumped infront of the rear tires will make them melt on the track

And to that I say One: Sir I don't run the track so it doesn't make a difference to me and two if carroll shelby put them on the GT-350 they must be ok.

Ya, I usually get the thumbs up or at least a stare... The day I bought the car my dad drove it home with me following in another car (he didnt think it was safe) and it was pretty cool cuz I could see everyone gawk at it.

I have gotten a couple people asking me to do burnouts or 'peel out' but i dont have enough power for that...[:@]

Like SJ said tho, almost EVERYONE i talk to who is like 45+ has a story of a mustang they used to have or their parents did or something like that. Its really amazing how much of an influence a simple car had over a generation. Both of my parents drove mustangs as their first cars, and my grandpa owned a 65, 66, and 67 cuz he loved them so much. I love telling people I have a 66 and have them tell me a story about their mustang and most of them say it was their favorite car they ever had.

oh ya, and sometimes ppl ask 'is that your dads?' or something like that...

and it is a little unnerving that people stop paying attention to the road to look. the other day these two kids in a jeep were staring at my car and almost hit the mail truck on the side of the road... one of my friends rear ended someone checking out a car, and I seriously think my first accident/ticket will be because im checking out a car. A bugatti veyron passed me on the highway once (im not kidding, and yes i crapped my pants) and i floored it to try to keep up and check it out but i got going pretty fast and backed off... and i catch myself not paying as close attention when a nice car passes me...

I get lots of "Nice cars" "It looks good" and "What year is that?". I love driving down the road seeing somebody stop dead in their tracks to point and stare at my car.:D Although the other day somebody said "Boy, I bet you were happy when you got that handed to you."[:@]

Iv gotten the typical thumbs up, generic complements. Had one guy shake my hand and a biker chick drive up next to me shout out "nice car" over the sound of her and my engine. Also gotten the "wanna trade cars" comment. I didnt respond but wish I had a witty comment like waffles.

i turned into the local kroger parking lot to turn around... some kids in a ford escort were following along with me acting like they wanted to race... im watching them and laughing at them... they keep looking at me next thing you know they werent paying attention and plowed right into a $70,000 dollar caddy...I go idling by them... flipped them off and said haha i won numbnuts!
they didnt look too enthused as did the owner of the caddy.

What you going to do, comes with the privilege of owning a classic....The most is at the gas station, people tripping over them selves to get to my car before I'm done getting gas. The best one was of a guy that ran off the road looking atthe car in the drive way, no one hurt but his pride...

I have gotten pretty much all the above in the 67 and 69, I love the ones that turn into stories of their old times with there mustang, you can just see them reminiscing. But my favorites are the civic, celica, etc drivers they check it out and rev those beastly 4's...

I enjoy people enjoying my car. I do the same thing when I see a nice car. I drove nextto a brand new Shelby Convert tonight. I couldn't stop staring at it.

9 out of 10 peoplethat come up to me tell me they or a relative had a old Mustang.

Get used to it. When you drive the greatest car ever made people are going to stare.

usually i dont pay attention to other drivers or people around me. funny story though...i was cruising around during hot august nights last year with 3 of my friends and we just finished going through and were driving to get back in line and one of my friends eye's get to about the size of silver dollars. i look over and there's this girl (probably in her early 20's, good looking too) flashing us...that was pretty awesome haha. sometimes if im lucky ill look over to the car next to me at a stop light and it'll be a good looking girl looking over, ive even gotten waves before haha. then i get old guys at the gas station stopping me and talking to me which is cool too...i love hearing the stories. all my neighbors have come up to me and told me they love it...which is good because i leave for school at 6:30 in the morning and i have glasspacks:D.

Just two days ago I passed a 66 red w/ white stripes vert while in my 66 coupe. We shared a wave as we passed, his engine sounded awesome. There are a handful of classic ownersin my areaand we've gotten into a habit of waving at each other.

The hot girls that want to get near the stang are awesome, I can not wait for the beach this summer. I'm saving like mad to get that dual exhaust in so I can shake the ground for the girls [sm=lildevil.gif]

I always get a kick out of people looking and waving. The best part though are the kids who's jaws drop when they see a classic roll by. I had one kid shout 'look daddy! a 1966 mustang!'and another who stopped his bmx on the side of the road to give me a nod and a thumbs up while I was sitting at an intersection.

We took the Stang out to the movies on Saturday night.

When the show was over we go back to the garage and get in the car and start backing out of our spot.

My Stang doesn't have A/C so in Houston the windows are always down. As I was backing out I heard a boy in the garage that was about maybe 12 years old say something like "Dad! Look at that cool old car!"

It does make you smile at times doesn't it?

But the really funny thing....I am pretty sure other folks don't notice imperfections in the car like I do. Have stopped the habit of telling people about the imperfections when someone tells me they like the Stang. Every time I look at the car I think about this or that which needs to be fixed or painted or whatever. :D

i like seeing people when they see my 69' coupe cause their faces just light up and they smile and wave and such, but i get so tired of all the little ricer kids revving at me when im sitting at stop lights, usually i just ignore them but somtimes i get aggravated and have to show them what real power is, its funny though one time this little civic all riced out you know the typical stuff carbon fiber hood, slammed to the ground with the massive exhaust tip, and filled with groupies, starts revving hollerin out his window for a race (i had already turned down 3 others in the last half hour) so i ablige him i let him get a car on me and i just roast the tires sideways and blow by him like he was nothing[sm=owned.gif], i saw him again a few minutes later he and his buddies wouldnt even look at me they just quietly drove by,they had even turned the radio down to a respectable level

my favorite thing though is when i see the look on the faces of the older hot rod guys when i get out of the car (i'll be 18 in july) its like they cant believe someone my age has such a nice car, and for everyone out there my daddy didnt buy it for me, i work three jobs and pay for everything i want and need, i get that somtimes too people just assume im a spoiled rich kid and that irritates me to no end

+1! "Its got a 408 in it right now" :D

Then you have to explain what that is and how and how a stroker works.

Every time I get out or fuel it up or walk up to or anything, someone asks what year or what motor, sometimes just if its for sale. It seems like every old guy out there has had something from the 60's and is just dying to tell ya about it.

Hahaha, I get all those comments too... "is it for sale?" "what year?" "Beautiful car" etc etc. I'm 21, but look like I'm 28 or so, so /i've never really been bothered with the dirty looks like a punk kid with daddies car. I have bought and sold 8 classic mustangs since i was 12, all on my own, so /i know it'd really bother me to see those faces or hear those comments.

It's really fun to get the guys coming over to ask what motor is in it.... when you're standing there pumping 110 octane race fuel (6.45/gal)at the local shell... and they continue to stand there til you're done... so they can hear you fire it up.

I love the girls checkin it out too. So does my fiancee. She doesnt even get jealous any more, she says it just makes her feel sexier about being with the guy WITH that car. :)

Alot of fun too is when you get a good lookin girl in a newer mustang, typically one daddy bought, that ACTUALLY recognizes the old ones. That really is a nice treat. Dad taught her well.

When I was driving my 69 before I tore it down for restore, I couldnt go in a store and come out without atleast 1 note on the windshield asking if I wanted to sell. Funny thing is when people try to give you technical advice, no offense but if you walk up to me and look like you just got done at an audience taping of pinks (ie. earnhardt tattoo, no shirt, jean shorts, and your women is wearing a cutoff) as many people in this area look like (but thats Tater Valley, TN for ya) im pretty sure that the fact I have a bsme you wont change my mind about anything.

I sometimes get the nice car, or that's a good year, and definately the I remember whens. Occasionally those that hear it tell me "Wow, that sounds good" yadda yadda. It looks like a real beater though, so people that get the courage up to race me usually end up trying to catch up, and failing. It seems like everyone loves the classics, and even a faded paint stock looking I6 gets respect.

i once had someone on a bicycle keeping staring at the car as he passed. so he fell over.
Felt awfully sorry for that fella. Stopped the car, got out to see if he's okay, but he sped of quite embarassed.
When I'm stopped I usually get: Is it quick?
most people over here just don't know what to make out of it.
I never had a boyracer challenging me once they hear the engine (even when they'd beat me easy hands down).

It's always interesting. You never know what kind of people you're going to run into, but it's usually an inpromptu "car show" whenever the car is stopped. Driving my car around is bad enough, but when I take my sons car out, it's almost a PITA. My house is set off of the road and we have a somewhatlong driveway. One time, three cars followed me home... all of the way down the driveway.... all of the way over to my detached shop building. I don't mind the "thumbs up" or "nice car buddy", but pulling down my driveway is taking it a little too far. Heck, it could be some crackhead looking to jack the car....

I know it's tempting to want to shove it in their faces. I am in the same boat, but I know I will have to say nothing when I'm driving around in my finished stang and they all finally see how awesome it turned out. Sometimes it's best to say nothing and let the car speak for you.

Could probably all tell stories like that.

I was interested in older Trans Ams and Classic Mustangs. My two favorite cars so I left it up to fate as to which I would end up buying. There was a really sweet '78 TA for sale but at the time I was waiting for a financial windfall that I knew was coming. By the time I could get the money together the TA was gone.

I had looked at lots of cars and I was about to give up since a lot of the Mustangs I saw out there were asking $14k or more, then one evening I was about to shut down the computer when I decided to do one more search. I went to Craig's list and searched for Mustangs. The guy who sold me my car had posted the ad at 11:45 p.m. and I found it at midnight. I called first thing the next morning, went to see the car that afternoon and the rest is history.

I had an intersting one today. My brother had never ridden in my Mustang so today we went to get Smash Bros at best buy. On the way there we passed a guy who runs constantly on Hwy 98 in Pensacola. He's usually carrying a smallAmerican flag, this time he had two. When we were coming up on him he stops running on the side of the highway, waves the flags and holds one out as we drive under it. In the car behind us were two Navy guys that I could see laughing and waving in my rear view. My brother thought it was awesome how much attention the car gets. His favorite of course was the car full of girls.

In the Mustang I get some looks and people often yell out
"nice car". Guys in later year Mustangs stare. Girls in later year Mustangs ignore me.

In the Firebird it's another world. People stare, guys flirt and yell out stuff, I get thumbs' up and waves and honks. I was on a 2-lane country road when some jackass drove up fast behind me, then came up next to me just to yell NICE FIREBIRD. Fortuntely there was nothing coming from the other direction.

I've heard a ton of stories about a first car, the elusive 1963 Mustang one man owned, how difficult it was to have sex in the backseat (I just smile and nod), etc.

Just today I had some moron in a very loud Fox body 'Stang rev and rev his engine next to me at a light. I ignored him as usual.

Way too many penis wavers out there!

gas stations were the worst (or the best). lots of attention driving around when i was in high school. now the 67 is undergoing a complete resto. the car grabbed so uch attention it was almost scary. all the usual thumbs up, is it for sale, what year/engine....ect. but i rerember that the public was not the only ppl that reconized my loud exaust, bright paint, and shiny rims... cops do too!

One time when working on it in the driveway with my friend this father and son (like 5 year old kid)

Kid: "Daddy look at that cool car!"
Dad: "yeah son, that's a mustang!"

haha it was funny. I get other looks as well. Once when driving around with a friend this newer impala on 22's full of guys are two lanes over just STARING at my car, then they rev it, so I speed up a little, throw it in neutral and rev it up as well, they just went bananas after that.

The stories are countless, but in my few weeks of driving her around I've gotten some thumbs up from numerous types of people. Gas stations are fun too but nothing too major yet, like full on convo's or anything. I used to get asked every day it seemed if it was for sale, we thought that once it was painted they would stop asking since it wasn't a "project" anymore, but nope I still get asked.

its really cool, but I sure wish a girl flashed me haha One day, maybe this summer :D those bikinis must get uncomfortable when sitting at a light next to a mach 1 ;)

also on another side note, I'm sure people think it's my dads car as well, but no it wasn't just handed down to me. Sure, it wasn't funded fully by me, I'll admit that of course, but I did all the hard work myself for 2 years to get her into this shape. To me and my father that learning experience is priceless.

I'm getting a couple of reactions.

The usual is someone complimenting the car (The signal flare red coupe is my daily driver).

The latest is at the gas pumps. I get glares. People with expensive to drive SUVs are the worst. I guess most people don't realize that my car is paid off, so I don't have to worry about a car payment and buying gas...just buying gas LOL.

I'm like a few of you though, I usually see the flaws in my car when complimented.

Well, on my way home from the paint shop (No chrome, mouldings, badging or even seats!)Iwas given the thumbs up twice and "awesome" was shouted at me from a guying mowing his lawn,All thisand the paint shop was 3 miles from my house in a town of 4,000 people! I can't wait for cruise nights.
My color is competition orange and a beautiful 1970 coupe I knew the color was gonna look great but this almost burns your retina's. I think I'm going to get double the reactions [sm=boosign.gif]
It's something I wanted, But it may be to much? I can see this now as being a problem [sm=bustedsign.gif].
No more squeeling the tires and claiming it was not meif the poo poo pull me over. (hard to blend in with an orange car).

Haha thanks. Feel free to use that one should the opp. arise.

I pull crap like that all the time. The other night, a kid pulled up next to me at like 130 am in a new cadillac, yells out the window "WANNA RACE?"

I just looked back and said...

"HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA"

Then I turned right.

Well one time I was at a stoplight with my other 1970 Mustang (stock 302) about 10 years ago when a nice azzed BARRACUDA (426 HEMI)pulled up next to me.
He yelled over and asked if I wanted to race, I said SURE!
I looked in the rear view mirror and seen nobody behind me, put my tranny in reverse and when the light turned green I backed up about a block and turned into a parking lot.
Never seen him again! just tire smoke from him.

with the mustang I get people slowing down in front of my house to stare especially when i have it out in the driveway and it is upside down or on its side. My other car I get all kinds off attention mostly from little kids. The wife and I are always hearing kids yell look at the fire truck.I also get alot of waves from guys in hot rods. I always wave at them anyways but it is cool to havethatrespect from them even if it is a 91 exploder. I am looking forward to driving my mustang around and see the reactions with that.

You mean your dad restored it."[&:] What hell is wrong with people, I guess I didn't lift one finger for my car.[8D] Oh well I just assume that those are the guys that drive mini vans and are pissed because their wife has their balls in a jar on her night stand.:D

I had a guy today yell out from the street in his truck if I wanted to sell my stang. I was working on the trunk, so I talked to him and he was like "I will give 15K for it" I was like "uhh I could probably get 35k for it IF i decided to sell it"

he responds with "well that depends on how nice it is" so I was like "its real nice, new paint, engine, transmission and interior"

he was so stubborn to accept the fact that I wasn't going to sell it lol oh well I guess its a compliment that he wanted to buy it, but he didn't even know it was a fastback [:@] He did say "that a '69?" though so that was odd that he would know that but be suprised when I said it was a mach 1 and him saying "oh its a fastback" lol.

all of the above, and a couple of other interesting ones:

once, driving to work in slow traffic, the lady behind me is holding her cell phoneout in front of her windshield so the other person could hear my exhaust

another time, driving near dusk, a flashing light catches my eye in the side mirror. the guy in the pickup truck behind me in the next lane is taking pics while we are doing 70 down the highway

the best comments are always "thanks for driving it around and not hiding it in the garage"

thanks for the comments guys.

the praise for how it looks needs to go to a previous owner. He found the car in calif and updated it in AZ. I dont know much more than that, basically the only history i had were a couple of magazines the car was featured in. That particular pic was from Mustangs and Fords. I've been wondering why he sold it. Maybe I should look him up and let him know the car is back in calif.

Cosmetically the car was great, though i wish i had a shelby hood on it instead of the stock 289 hood on which a mach1 hood scoop was added (I think thats what the scoop is). I may change the hood if I can find someone who can paint a new hood to match the paint, and maybe replace the billet grill.

Mechanically I've had fun making some changes. I've updated suspension all around (Global West), new 9" rear end, new holley carb, re-worked electrical etc. Basically making it how i want it and able to take on the track and have some fun with it.

when i take friends for rides they notice the attention the car gets and they can't believe it. it's funny cause they are not used to it. i get the usual thumbs up, what year, how old are you, stories of their cars, and the very annoying staring while driving. i feel like one day someone will hit me doing this too.

one time i got someone who pulled out his checkbook and a pen and told me to name my price! i love my car so i told him to put it away:).

most compliments are at gas stations, most stares are by pedestrians, most a$$holes are ricers and beat up s**ts with stupid comments (i ignore them cause they're not worth my time), and even one accident occured out front of my house cause someone was staring at my car in the driveway[&:]. i also get some compliments and rare smart comments from driver-bys at my house when i'm out.

Some woman (maybe 20 something) was coming from my right side and making a left turn. She was looking at the Stang to such a degree that she darn near ran off the road making her left hand turn.

I just laughed.....especially since I don't think my car is that great. It is maybe a 20 ft car and probably more of a 50ft car, looks good in the right photo or from 20 ft away but when you get closer not so much, needs lots of work.

I just laughed.....especially since I don't think my car is that great. It is maybe a 20 ft car and probably more of a 50ft car, looks good in the right photo or from 20 ft away but when you get closer not so much, needs lots of work.

I feel the same about mine, I took it to a show and started picking out every flaw in it while comparing it to the ones around it. Just kept telling myself "It's a work in progress, someday it'll be this nice." Even though, I still get a ton of compliments and thumbs-ups when I drive it.

Don't want to make you feel even smaller, but at 17 I am 6'2' 185.
And now to the topic. From the view of one of the people who gawks at mustangs.
I usually will follow it till its out of my sight. Put on my Jealous face and wish I could have one.

Nope, see I LOVE mustangs, but am have neither the financialsecurity nor the room (according to my dad) for a Mustang. I would give my Jeep away in a heartbeat if it meant getting a mustang.

I drove the Stang to work today and just got into an unexpected "car show".

We just moved into a building that hasn't been built that long and there are still lots of work crews doing build out, etc on other floors. Pulled into the garage and a guy was asking me all sorts of questions about the car and ended up having a mini car show...LOL! Just a good ol boy type so I figured what the hell. Acted like if I wanted to give him the Mustang and a few bucks he would give me his Harley...had to say no thanks on that one. ;)

As to the dangerous parts of town, Houston sure has them also. Only thing about Houston is the zoning is crazy so you can go from a yuppie type upscale neighborhood to ghetto in the matter of a few blocks. Hence why I am in the Aikido dojo several times a week training.

Why pay for training? PAy for a CCW and carrying your training the the form of "BAM! BAM! BAM!"
