BicketyBam -> RE: Cracked block pictures (5/5/2008 5:42:28 PM)

I am sorry to hear that happened, but happy that you have the money to put a new build in.  It's the poor SOB that has no money and blows his engine that I really feel sorry for.

Good luck with the new build.

98LS1 -> RE: Cracked block pictures (5/5/2008 6:11:12 PM)

Big block and carbed.  You'll be the only S197 I've seen do it.  Make big power without taking out a second mortgage like most of these guys have to do.

Sarge_13 -> RE: Cracked block pictures (5/5/2008 8:26:25 PM)

Damn Simon that sucks. What is your budget for the new block? If this isn't your DD I'd suggest going the route that 98LS1 suggested.

It's only money right?

I live in the People's Republic of Kalifornia and because of my job and wanting to be able to register the vehicle for use on CA roadways, a pushrod motor with a big carb isn't happening.

Right now I am CARB legal and plan to stay that way.

Basically I downloaded the tune from my tuner onto my computer and sent it out to a tuner so he could look at it and write me a new tune for some mods I was planning on doing.  I had to (or thought I did) do two or three flashes to get my car back on the original turbo tune.  Well somewhere in my idiocy I put the wrong tune back in the car, or it loaded wrong. I went on a weeks vacation with my family and when I got back I was supposed to do some data logging and send it out for analysis.  I started the car, let it warm up and it started strange, made a wierd noise, idled rough and then smoothed out.  I completely forgot about the messing with the computer stuff a week earlier.  Anyway, just casual driving blew the motor.  It wasn't even hardly going yet.

Oh well.  I am still just baffled at times it blew up.

The best part is my wife is so understanding.  She is 100% supportive and is pushing me to put in a great and powerful motor.  So . . .we shall see.

428 is a waste, go find a 429/460 out of an older truck, stroker to 500+CI and thres an easy 7-800rwhp and about the same tq depending on setup. just changing the intake carb and a very mild cam will give you in the mid 400's

67mustang302 -> RE: Cracked block pictures (5/5/2008 11:33:16 PM)

Turbo'd? So you figure it detonated and busted up the piston/rod assembly? That's one nice thing about carbs and tunes, you have to physically put it back together so you remember what your jetting was and you don't have to worry about software failing to load properly. That sucks, but it's also an opportunity. Stroker with some ported heads and cams [:D].

LOL.. the 428 wouldn't be THAT big of a waste.. I'd personally say get a hold of either the 460 with a stroker kit like you suggested brudda, though my personal favorite would still have to be a 427 side oiler with ported H/I, a big cam, and a good carb.. [:D]
