hello, i just brought i brand new mustang gt and ive put 1000 miles on it...whenever i go over railroad tracks or something i big thumping sound comes from the rear, left rear i think...i think i know what it is but i was hoping to get some of your opinions as well...im about to put some new 20's on it but wanted to get the dealer to check it out before i did so they couldnt blame it on the wheels...your opinions would be greatly appreciated...thank you.
I had the same noise on my white coupe and was told that it was the solid axle and the suspension. I rarely heard it, and it had to be a serious bump for me to notice it. Never had the dealer check it, but was always on my mind. Again, someone told me it was the solid rear axle making the thud. I know there has been a couple of posts on this, but never followed up to see what others had found out. I'd be interested just the same. Hopefully some one will post a reply!

Might be a TSB for the rear, but they might have already fixed that. It was an issue on my 2005.

I had a similar problem when I first purchased my car....took it into dealership, and they said it was the front strut mounts...not sure if that helps, but thats the problem i encountered!
Perhaps the muffler? On my car, there is play in the muffler hangers and over big bumps, they hit the body making a thumping noise. A simple check is pushing the muffler upward with some force to see if it moves/possibly makes the noise.

I have an 08 GT with 4k and has always made this sound when going over big bumps. I have read about it being mufflers, but I ruled that out on mine. It is kind of funny it only seems to come from one side. I'll check the tire wrench next.
I found mine to be the spare tire FWIW. If it is under warranty and unmodded yet, take it in
In this case it really doesn't matter if it's modded or not b/c of the nature of the problem. I take my car in for warranty claims with my mods on. The mods really arent the cause of noises or suspension. Now if I blew my engine you can bet those mods would be off in a second.
Either way I don't think tn_gt has mods yet.

alright thanx for the posts guys, i was thinking it was one of the rear struts, maybe a bad one or a bad mount...thats what it sounds like most to me anyways, but already told the dealer about it so im gonna go ahead and put my new 20's on it that should be in before the week is over...but thanx for the replies guys, ill try to post some pics up asap when i get those wheels on
Look at the exhaust pipe that runs over the panhard brace on the driver's side. Mine was a lot closer to the brace than the passenger side. I had bullet mufflers installed and the tech noticed where the exhaust pipe was making contact with the panhard brace. IMO, there needs to be at least 3/4" clearance to avoid contact - at least that is what I have now and have no problems.

well its not really a single thump sound, its like a really quick repetetive thumping so i really dont think its the muffler or spare tire or wrench cause it wouldnt thump so rapidly as this is
Have the same sound on my 08. Depending on how fast i go over a bump will determine how loud the sound will be. The sound is definatley metal hitting metal. Checked the spare tire in the trunk and everythign seems to be in there nice and tight. I will have to check again before i call the dealership to look at it.
wow you are totally right, i dont know what i was thinking...i guess thats just part of being 17 and not knowing what the hell im talking about lol, but i guess i read in some other forum of somebody saying they had the same problem and the dealer told them it was their rear strut, idk but thanx for letting me know, i feel stupid now lol
The way most people learn things is to do it or ask about it . How else are going to know? So that being said just stick around and you will learn plenty about these cars.
well thank you very much, ill be honest i have never in my life liked ford...the only ones i liked were the lightning, mustang (not all) and the gt40...but i got a killer deal on my mustang and its faster than the charger r/t i was about to buy so i went with it and havent regretted it once (except the key mark somebody thought i needed the second day i had it)
