Unfortunately it blew today.  The thing that makes it worst is, it's all my fault.  I have been working with a tuner in Florida to try and get a tune for the car.  Between the downloading of the original back up file and the orginal canned tune, I messed it up somewhere and either loaded the wrong tune or didn't load properly to begin with.  I don't know and don't really care at this point.  I hadn't driven my car in a week and had completely forgotten about messing with the tuner.

I started my car as usual today and noticed when I started it, I felt a strange vibration like it was missing.  It idled slightly differently but for whatever reason, the red flag didn't go up and I forgot I had been messing with the tuner.  I let it warm up for a few mintues and then very casually, drove out of the neighborhood and onto the main boulovard leading to where I was going to do some data logging for the tuner.  From a stop, I went through 1st and into 2nd normally (like an old white man) and about halfway through 2nd I gave it some more pedal, not to the floor by any means, the car vibrated and a large plume of the most beautiful blue smoke rolled out the back of the car.  It then died and I knew what happened.  I coasted to a stop and tried to start it.  The car wouldn't even turn over.  It siezed.  I popped the hood and saw oil on the underside and all over the driver side inner fender well.  Oh well.  The car is too low to get a jack underneath it right now so pics will have to wait until later when I get it up (no jokes please) and can actually look underneath the car at the carnage.

So now the plans for a built motor start.  I'm thinking a 298 ci forged short block, 1 mm oversize valves, fuel pump upgrade, GT 500 TB and call it good.  Oh, and maybe tuned ??

I will most likely trailer the car down to San Bernardino, CA to let ST motor sports work their magic.  I have no idea about what motor manufacture (MMR, DSS, CHP or ???) to use and really don't care.  If ST motorsports is okay with taking the ball and running with it, so am I.

Any helpful thoughts would be appreciated.

it's odd it didn't throw a dtc, while
you were driving away from the house

if you had a a/f gauge, do you think
it would have made any difference in
the outcome

hope it gets built better and stronger
then ever

That sucks!  Good thing you can afford to just fix it.  If my block 'sploded the car would be sitting for months before I could even start planning on fixing it.

Obviously I want it done ASAP, but I really want it done right.  My schedule will coincide with theirs like most shops. . .

I was thinking the same thing abou the engine codes but??? I'm know computer guru, don't pretend to be.

As far as the A/F ratio.  I have an AEM wideband A/F gauge.  The thing is, it happened so fast I never got the chance to look at it.  I really never do unless I am actually doing a run to check it. 

I just checked the boost gauge and saw it read 10.9 psi.  Really that's 10.3 or so and I have ran that psi since I got the turbo and the A/F would top out around 11.8 or so.  I probably didn't clear the last high reading on the gauge so I will never know what the actual boost was at the time of explosion.

Budget?  What's that mean? 

I really don't know.  I don't like to toot my own horn, but I have the money to run side by side with Modaddict, but I choose to not do it.  I am very , how shall I say, frugal? with my money.  Cheap things cost too much, so I buy the expensive ones that last forever. 

I am married with little kids so I need to save some for later. LOL

Go big bore 331ci, I would if I was to do it over again. Calihpaddict has a turbo with that block set up and NA he got 359rwhp before the turbo was put on[:D]

500-600 streetable HP with room to grow with be nice.  My turbo can support 620 I beleive, it's 60 mm, so I think something in the mid 500s isn't asking much.

369 N/A is great.

Simon1 - that is a ****ing horror story. Every time a motor blows, it just breaks my hear t a bit cuz I know what it feels like to throw a rod. It sucks.

While the consolation is often a built motor, the price you pay just sux.

Adam doesnt do my wrenching but he does all of my tuning. I can also vouch for that he does a great job tuning my car. He got me 550rwhp with no tuning only drivability at 5,000rpms on 9 psi and we plan to see any thing from 15-17psi once we are finished at max rpms. The car drives like it is stock and I dont think I would have any one else tune my car other then him.

That really stinks, sorry to hear about it. 

At least now you will get forged and wont have to worry about this happening again.

Tuning is so important I dont know why people use mailed tunes.  I still have the FRPP one, but that this is so rich and conservative, I dont mind running it.  On the dyno I dont think I went past 16 deg timing.

I would go to ST in a heartbeat, but as an eastcoaster that isnt an option.  I plan to hit up VMP for a dyno tune as soon as I have some traction and clutch things sorted. 

I plan to tell him to tune it for 10psi and 91 octane and plenty safe.  I will always run 93 octane for safety although there is a good chance I will be moving soon so I cant gaurantee the good stuff.

I hope to someday forge on my schedule not be forced too.  Hope to recoup some funds from my stock shortblock.

I hope everything works out for you, and you are back on the road soon.

Adam sent me a tune he worked on after he tuned a 2007 mustang with saleen he had in his shop.  Then I did a few runs going WOT and crusing several datalogs and now my tune is AWESOME.  After spending time with adam tuning my car I won't let anyone touch the tune I really enjoy how it drives..  I couldn't be happier.  I can't say enough how great the tune is.  I loved the fact he would make changes and let me decide if I wanted to keep them. 
Really tuned the car for me and what I like.

I have wideband and datalogged everything he wanted.

As far as a motor is concerned how about one of the new Aluminator from FRPP. They should have the three valve ready now.

My motor let go at 3200 rpm's normal light throttle at 30mph. Two rods one through the side and one through the top!

What was your setup, power level, psi?  I know it wasn't a twinscrew just by looking at the above pic.
