Hard starting after sitting for a few hours

CataclysmGT -> Hard starting after sitting for a few hours (5/4/2008 6:24:16 PM)

Ever since the supercharger install, when I go to start the car after its been sitting a few hours, its cranks a few times, then sounds strange trying to start. The last few times it was required to try twice. Some black soot from the exhaust also puffs on the first hard start. I have noticed more fouling on the exhaust as well, but this could be due to the richer A/F of being supercharged.

Is starting a tuning issue?

You might have a bad injector but you would think that the PCM would throw a code. Don't know what mods you've done to the fuel system. Do you know if the check valve is still in the pump assymb?

TOMBSTANG -> RE: Hard starting after sitting for a few hours (5/5/2008 1:20:09 AM)

man seems liek you have had nothing but bad luck since the s/c install. hope its nothing major

CataclysmGT -> RE: Hard starting after sitting for a few hours (5/5/2008 2:19:35 AM)

Fuel system is the GT500 system from the Whipple HO kit.
Its odd, because the first 10 or starts after the S/C, there were no hard starts. Now, its like clockwork.....leave the car for a few hours and it pauses for a sec, or requires a 2nd go at her.

As for the injectors....looking at fuel trims bank vs bank, they are so close to one another, eliminating that theory we think.

All will be solved in July. Adam/ST Motorsports is building me a rocket. New engines are good things....hahaha.

TOMBSTANG -> RE: Hard starting after sitting for a few hours (5/5/2008 11:34:56 PM)

good luck with the rocket.

what are you doing with your saleen rims when you get your forged ones???

MustangGT0405 -> RE: Hard starting after sitting for a few hours (5/6/2008 6:30:11 AM)

I have soot on my exhaust too, but no trouble starting.

Hate to harp on it, but did you ever get the FRPP tuner?  I think that would clear up all of your trouble's till you head over to ST.

CataclysmGT -> RE: Hard starting after sitting for a few hours (5/6/2008 7:05:29 AM)

You know, I haven't got the FRPP tuner yet.  I think I'll order it today, swap for the smaller pulley and then use that until ST's magic can be worked. Not that Justin's tune was bad, it was spot on after he adjusted it a bit (his A/F was so flat.....can't even be called a curve. )
At least the FRPP tune will ensure I don't blow it up....haha.

I'm still looking for someone that's blown a motor on the frpp tune.  I don't think it's possible after seeing the dyno run on M0dular Fords where the air/fuel ratio was 16:1 or something, because they forgot to hook up one of the fuel pump drivers.  That engine should have blew, but the tune pulled timing and killed power like crazy.

Mygt500 had a similar starting problem, but I think his was just when the engine was cold.  Mine would stumble a little after sitting for 8-10 hours, but cleaning the MAF sensor seems to have cured it.

MustangGT0405 -> RE: Hard starting after sitting for a few hours (5/6/2008 8:46:20 AM)

Good idea, I think that will cure alot of your problems.

MYGT500 - had a cold start issue I think that was tune related.

Good luck with the build.

CataclysmGT -> RE: Hard starting after sitting for a few hours (5/6/2008 10:42:34 AM)

On a semi related note..........those with relocated IAT's.....do you observe the temp rising fast WOT? It barely changes for me, even after 5-10 seconds WOT.
Perhaps the intercooler works better then I expected.

MustangGT0405 -> RE: Hard starting after sitting for a few hours (5/7/2008 9:26:21 AM)

5-10 seconds I dont see a big increase.  Playing on the highway for long periods in the throttle, or back to back quick acceleration runs I have seen it get quite high.

But if you just stab it and go it takes a bit to climb.

JTE_502 -> RE: Hard starting after sitting for a few hours (5/8/2008 2:09:55 AM)

I have this same problem in my 08.  It only has 3000 miles on it and I have a C&L intake and Brenspeed tune.  Every now and then after sitting for a while I will try to start it and it will just crank and crank and crank, and then finally when it hits it runs ragged as hell for a little while and blows out a bunch of smoke.  It's like it just sits and floods itself for some reason.  I wouldn't think its tune related as I have the same mods as a million other people.  I guess I should go try cleaning the intake sensors first and see if that helps.  I just don't see why with it being off how it manages to flood itself?

CataclysmGT -> RE: Hard starting after sitting for a few hours (5/8/2008 7:26:21 PM)

I found a solution: don't wait for the fuel pump to prime.
I usually let the fuel pump makes its noise, then turn the key. If I start the car cold, without letting the pump prime, it starts right up like normal.

mygt500 -> RE: Hard starting after sitting for a few hours (5/9/2008 2:05:46 AM)

You are right as well as moose! I had a cold starting issue when cold 40 or lower...resolved with a tweak of the tune!  J

That doesn't sound like a solution.[8|]  Do you have a fuel pressure gauge?  What's the fuel pressure after the pump runs?

MustangGT0405 -> RE: Hard starting after sitting for a few hours (5/12/2008 7:35:49 AM)

Did you get the FRPP tuner yet?

Also I dont let the pumps prime I just turn it over.  Dont get many cold starts in FL though, its been in the 90's lately.

CataclysmGT -> RE: Hard starting after sitting for a few hours (5/12/2008 10:22:12 AM)

I've been working a lot lately.......stupid plant start up  (Natural gas plant). I'll be getting the ECM code so I can submit the form today.

I always wait for my pumps to stop running.
