View Full Version : Another No Starting Stang..any ideas? UPDATE 2
dreamer1uk 05-04-2008, 08:46 PM Hi all,
Well my 2.3 LX Stang has been great until today. I went to start her and she turns over but doesnt fire. I do not hear the fuel pump prime the system either. I checked the fuses and there all good.
Whats my next step? How do i hot wire the fuel pump to test that or how would i test the fuel pump relay.
Thanks guys
sleeper_inc 05-04-2008, 08:50 PM Hot wire the fuel pump and then check your timing bet
Touring 05-04-2008, 09:09 PM not to hi jack your threat but can someone post a pic of where the fuel pump relay is? thank you

How would my timing effect if my fuel pump operation? I no longer hear it kick on when i turn the ignition. And how do i hot wire it?
Thanks.
sleeper_inc 05-04-2008, 09:33 PM you wont hear the fuel pump kick on time after time. only when the pressure is low will it kick in.
Like said above, with the right amount of pressure the fuel pump wont even turn on untill the engine is started.
The timing BELT could have jumped a tooth from being loose or a bad tooth.

dreamer1uk 05-04-2008, 10:09 PM Thanks for the response sleeper. How would i jump the pump from the diagnostic connector? I do have a OBD1 scanner too that will check relays, so im assuming it will check the fuel pump relay too.
Thanks.
sleeper_inc 05-04-2008, 10:19 PM It should be fuel pump to self test in, if not then try fuel pump to anyone of the ones on there
dreamer1uk 05-05-2008, 12:19 PM One thing i did also notice when trying to crank the car was that the tach needle bounces. I wont be able to hook up my scanner till wednesday to check that relay :(
sleeper_inc 05-05-2008, 08:46 PM So dose mine. It dosen`t mean anything unless its when the car is running
dreamer1uk 05-05-2008, 09:59 PM Thanks for the response...again sleeper.
Now i have another question. Suppose the relay is good (only $17 so i ordered one anyhow), and the fuel pump is bad, how much of a challange is it to drop the tank and replace the pump? Is it possible to do the above with hand tools and regular floor jacks?
Thanks again all.
sleeper_inc 05-05-2008, 10:06 PM Put jack under the tank, undo straps holding it up, undo fuel lines, drop tank, replace pump, add new gaskets, and reconnect everything
dreamer1uk 05-07-2008, 06:15 PM Hey guys,
So i pulled the codes. It is code 543 - Fuel Pump Secondry Circuit Open.
So, bad relay? My scan tool did not report back that any of the relays are not working, and the car still doesnt start. Still no sound from the fuel pump either.
The new relay will be here tomorrow though. I looked in the engine bay to locate it but no luck. Its on the passenger side fender area right?
Ideas?
Thanks again all for your help.
sleeper_inc 05-07-2008, 09:59 PM What year is your car? I know the 87-90 had it under the drivers seat and the 93 had it in the engine compartment
dreamer1uk 05-08-2008, 01:04 AM I think i found it. It looks like its on the passenger of the engine bay.
Hopefully this new relay will fix my issue. Ill let you guys know this weekend when i install it.
dreamer1uk 05-08-2008, 07:41 PM Hey guys,
So another question, which relay is the relay for the fuel pump? I see 4 relays by the passenger side fenderand none of them are labeled. My Haynes manual doesnt state which relay is which either. My new relay arrived today and will be installed once i figure out which relay is which.
Sorry for the continuous questions.
sleeper_inc 05-08-2008, 09:52 PM What year is your car?
dreamer1uk 05-08-2008, 11:09 PM Hi,
It would be a 1993 2.3 LX Convertible. :D
dreamer1uk 05-10-2008, 06:06 PM Another update -
Well, this search for the relay is becoming really confusing. I looked on the passenger fender to find what looks to be a CCRM. I have read online though that the fuel pump relay is not apart of that CCRM and that its by the MAF sensor or in the passenger side kick panel by the ECC.
When i look for the fuel pump relay online, all the Ford parts sites come up with the same 2" sqaure relay.
Before i start to tear the interior out, or pull my air box and all,has anyone changed there fuel pump relay on a 2.3 DIS engine or is it the CCRM after all?
Im guessing i should try calling the dealership too.
Thanks
sleeper_inc 05-11-2008, 07:59 PM The fuel pump relay, fan control, and ignition control is in the same unit
dreamer1uk 05-11-2008, 11:39 PM Hi Sleeper,
Thats what i was thinking too.
Is the CCRMpart even still available? I checked the part number on some Ford sites and it said that the part was not found.
Or is anyone selling one on here? :D
Thanks.
sleeper_inc 05-11-2008, 11:40 PM Any parts store should sell it
dreamer1uk 05-11-2008, 11:43 PM I checked Autozone, Nappa and Advance Auto and they dont have it. Ill call a dealership tomorrow and go from there.
The only modules the above stores have is the Cruise control and the PCM, unless Autzone classes the CCRM as a PCM. http://www.autozone.com/R,APP1146401/vehicleId,1899701/initialAction,partProductDetail/store,3564/partType,01335/shopping/partProductDetail.htm
dreamer1uk 05-12-2008, 06:29 PM :(
Well that CCRM doesnt seem to exist anymore. Ive spent over 2 hours online trying to trace a new unit or even a refurbished one down and no one sells them.
Does anyone have 1 for sale or know a store i could call to order one? I didnt get home in time to call the dealership but even the Ford OEM parts stores online no longer have the CCRM.
Also, to hot wire the fuel pump, i just need to use a paper clip in the Fuel Pump Test point to the Computer Test Ground point on the ECC test connector right?
That way i can rule out the Fuel Pump for sure.
dreamer1uk 05-17-2008, 09:31 PM Yay,
Its running again. After we pushed it into my drive way, i was checking the Intertia switch. The switchwasnt tripped but i think the wiring to that switch as loose as the 2nd i pressed that plug in and tried starting the car, it ran.
Still for my week off ill be checking all the wiring as well as doing more basic maintenance. I started to tear out my interior today too for a color change.
Ill be making my own project thread soon, yay.
Thanks for all those that helped.
