My 05 V6 has about 75,000 miles on it. My girlfriend lives 2 hours and 15 minutes away. I drive down there once a week, sometimes more, to see her. Every time I do, it uses a full tank of gas. I get back home and I'm on E. She just got an 06 V6 Convertible, with 40,000 miles on it. She came down to see me yesterday, and instead of using a half a tank of gas to get here, she used about a quarter of a tank..
That's a pretty significant difference. What could be causing my **** for mileage!?!?!?!

i found it humourous how you used a complete variable like the time it takes you to drive somewhere, as opposed to how many miles away it is.
my guess for your problem is that you think your car is a gtspeedracerzoom! and your girlfriend just drives with a lighter right foot.
if you at least told us how long (being that a trip in your car is exactly 2 hours and 15 minutes) it takes her to do the drive, it would tell us a little more.

Well I'm not sure how many miles it is exactly. But it takes her the same amount of time to get here. It's on the turnpike, where the speed limit is 75. I go between 80 and 85, and so does she. I NEVER go WOT anymore with gas as expensive as it is. I stay in as low RPMS as I can. I'm not sure of the exact distance, but it takes us the same amount of time to drive there, both driving conservatively, and she uses WAY less gas. Plus hers is a convertible. Not that it would make a huge difference, but still a little bit of extra weight.

I would get rid of this thing in a heartbeat if I could, but I'm pretty far in the hole right now so it's not an option =[ Otherwise I would be driving a Fox for sure!

its almost exactly 2 hours and 15min to get to school for me, and it takes me roughly between a quarter and a third of a tank one way. even if im hard on it the whole way, i dont go under 2/3 tank left.

Ok I used Mapquest and it's 144 miles from my town to hers. Takes me half of a tank, and took her just barely over a quarter to go the same distance.

assuming you have a 14 gallon tank, thats about 20mpg
mattlowe01

but you cant just go by the gauges since there always wrong. I get 50 miles on a full tank of gas according to mine, then it drops like a rock
FIGURE OUT YOUR DAMN MILAGE THE RIGHT WAY then come back and bitch
MrAWatts
05-04-2008, 04:48 PM
And if I can't go by the gauges, what is the right way to find out my mileage.
And even if that was 20mpg, it's about how another car, same model only convertible, is getting much better mileage than mine.
It's highway cruising the entire way there.
I recently got a new air filter. Guess I should try a new fuel filter and plugs too.

....? seriously
reset your odometer to 0 next time you fill your tank
drive till your tank is empty
fill it up
divide the miles by how many gallons you filled up with
there ya go.

$420/mo is outrageous. women naturally have lower insurance rates than men, but even a 16yr old male living in a suburban area near a major city, with full coverage shouldnt be paying much more than $200/mo on a 2dr car. this assuming your record is clean or fairly clean.

so you go through the half tank just going there or going there and back? because it seems more reasonable that by the time you get back you have a half tank and when she gets to your house she has a quarter and you end up confused. not trying to insult your intelligence but thats something i would do haha

MPG = Miles driven / gas consumed in Gallons.
To get a rough idea quickly. Fill tank to first pump shut-off, reset tripmeter, drive on next highway trip at steady speed limit, refill tank; note fill tank amount, calculate as above. Really a longer trip gives more accurate calculation, but it makes a difference what terrain is, lots of hill climbing or driving into a headwind will increase gas as will cold ,sub zero temps.
All the best Steve.
P.s. DO NOT overfill the tank since your carbon canister can be damaged if you repeatedly overfill the fuel system.

Nooooo, trust me I wouldn't make that mistake. I've been driving down there every week, sometimes twice a week, for about 8 months. It's a full tank of gas there and back. Every time before I leave, I fill up my tank. I get down there and have exact half a tank every time. And every time I get back, my gas light comes on about 3-5 miles from my house.

Can't do that really =/ S197s have a stupid gas tank. Sometimes I'm at the pump a longggg time. They fumes/vapors will build up and cause repeated pump shut offs, even if I only have a quarter of a tank. So sometimes it gets overfilled because I'm not sure when I've really filled it up. What damage does that do?

If the carbon canister is filled with gas (from overfilling the gas tank) then when the EVAP purge cycle is started, it will possibly force gas through the canister into the purge control valve & into the engine intake. This cycle is meant to vent gas fumes not neat gasoline! Also there should be some air in the tank so that when pressure is built up in the tank (like when you fill up your tank in the hot sunshine, gasoline expands as it gets warmer) it is allowed to vent through the EVAP system. If there is nowhere for the gasoline to expand it could crack the canister or a blow off a purge line or some other similar problem.
I'm guessing you have tried to fill your tank SLowly!!! I've also heard that some gas tanks are hard to fill due to air ventilation problems while re-fuelling. Not sure there is an answer to that one, although filling through a long pipe from the bottom of the tank would work it would probably be illegal to do this at the gas station.
All the best, Steve.

my 06 5 speed has 37,000. yours doesnt sound too far off on mpg. I usually average 80miles per quarter tank. sometimes i do a little better, sometimes a little worse. The best i got was 360 to a tank and that was cruising at 70mph the whole way.
