View Full Version : pictures of the '65
65rangoon 05-04-2008, 11:23 AM Here are some pictures i took of the '65 im getting. Still gotta work out the details with my grandma on how much she wants for it. I know she will float the loan for me and i can just make payments to her if need be so thats pretty nice for me.
my great grandpa bought it in Arizona in '72 when he was there teaching/playing doctor at a college there. In the early 80s he moved back to iowa and gave it to my grandma & grandpa and they had it ever since. All ive known it to be was a parade car or a sunday cruiser.
In the mid 70s it was repainted, upholstered, and a new top i believe. The reciepts i have go back to '73 and dont say exactly what was done as far as the upolhstery.
odometer reads 28,xxx miles and i am assuming that is all the more miles it has since in the early 80s when my great gpa gave it to my grand parents the service reciepts only show 22k-23k miles and i know my grandparents didnt drive it much.
well enough of the chit chat, heres some pictures. it was dusty, but the body is straight.

blane17 05-04-2008, 11:40 AM i like it. :D
65rangoon 05-04-2008, 11:53 AM haha thanks. shes got a lot of extras with her too. ive got a folder packed with receipts & paper work on it down to the paint brochures from the mid 70s when my great gpa had it painted. In the trunk is 2 more sets of hub caps. the one set is still taped up in the box with "new '80"wrote on them and im not sure what design they are. the others are the other style of hubcap ive seen on the 65s. more of a solid cap then the wire cap like whats on it right now.
there were a few other boxes & bags but i didnt dig through them as i was only starting it up and letting it run for a while. im taking friday the 16th off to head back to iowa and take it to my parents to work on it for the weekend. needs an oil change, and a good detailing. then im going to be replacing the plug wires (dry rot/cracked a little) changing the t-stat & gasket as its leaking slightly. planning on dropping the tranny pan and replacing the fluid & gasket and possibly might replace the output shaft seal as it may have some slight dry rot (when i started it there was some tranny fluid on the ground after but then i moved it and i did not make a new spot so not sure?)
she started up pretty good. sat for 1.5 yrs so i took the coil wire off the cap and let it crank over 3-4 revs then stopped and did that a few times to get some oil flowing. then put the coil wire back on and it fired right up.
there are some minor things from over the years but its in great shape.
fast65 05-04-2008, 12:10 PM Good looking car, have fun with it.
JamesW 05-04-2008, 02:15 PM Tell your grandparents to hold it for you and go buy yourself a little daily driver for now. That is WAY too nice a car to jump into as your first car. Go get it when you're 25 and can afford it.
true66gt 05-04-2008, 02:23 PM looks like the interior was repainted too. thats like hospital room white. and i can see it used to be off white/parchment color.
put some new wheels on that thing and itll be amazing. but i kinda agree with james and have your grandparents hold onto it until you can competely afford it. i dont think it should be used as a DD. keep it a sunday/parade car.
65rangoon 05-04-2008, 03:14 PM ive got a 2002 monte carlo as a DD .. this will be sitting in the garage with a cover on it 99% of the time and will only be pulled out to take to a car show or just for a sunday cruise once in a blue moon - the other 1%.
as far as waiting till im 25 and can afford it, im 23 and live about an hour from the chicago loop and make more then both my parents combined ... granted they live in a town of 25k people back in iowa between iowa city & the quad cities so there is a small cost of living difference.
i guess i kind of worded it badly in the original post about my grandma floating the loan.
im not sure how much she is going to charge me for it but i could pay it 100% cash up to a very fair amount if i really wanted to, but its better for her tax wise to just float the loan herself and me pay her so much each month rather then getting 1 lump sum due to her being retired and all it would mess with her 2008 taxes.
Also if its appraised at anything higher then $10k she cant write it off as a gift becuase then youd have the gift tax. If i were married then technically it could be wrote off as a gift to me and my spouse as long as its appraised for $20k of less and the title/registration was in both names.
-------------------
im not sure if the interior was repainted or not, i dont have the paperwork here at my house as its still at my parents place in iowa but ill be back there the weekend after mothers day so i can look through it all.
some of the "hospital room white" :D is caused by my camera. i didnt take much time setting up the white balance or anything else and just snapped some pictures to have while i look for insurance. the lens i used has VERY good color saturation and produces very vivid colors. -- photography is a hobby so i have some semi-pro/pro equipment.
it is actually slightly less white then what it appears in the pictures, just like it really needs to be detailed but you wouldnt know with the pictures - aside from the dust haha. The shine/glisten of the paint is not that prevelent in person.
65rangoon 05-04-2008, 03:20 PM ... also those were 4mb photos that were shrunk down so some details were altered. thats some of the color deal as well
true66gt 05-04-2008, 03:37 PM so why doesnt she just sell it to you for like 10k? i mean, she could just GIVE it to you. but 10k is fair if grandma is selling it. unless shes low on money and cant afford to "give" it to you as an inheritance.
if you're 23 then i take back my agreement with james. thats deffinately old enough for that car. we were probably thinking you were another teenager asking what can he do to his car. lol.
65rangoon 05-04-2008, 03:44 PM haha its cool, and hopefully that longer post as a rebuttle(sp?) didnt come off to harsh.
yea im not really sure what she is going to sell it to me for. shes is not hurting for money due to various reasons. shes just not sure what a "fair" price would be to ask since we are family and ive been in love with the car since she let me drive it when i was 15 yrs old.
shes talked to people and looked on the net and found anything from $12k - $35k for a value. that $35k was from a local chevy dealership though and not really an antiques place.
i want to talk to a place up in Cedar rapids and see if they do appraisals and take it to them. Duffy's up there does nothing but sell/trade classic cars
true66gt 05-04-2008, 03:53 PM id say its worth around 18-20k as it sits right now.
JamesW 05-04-2008, 07:32 PM Yeah..sorry for the assumption you were a 16 year old. Shouldn't have done that.
It's a very nice car... Don't know about up there, but that would easily carry over 20K down here.
Mustangdemon67 05-04-2008, 08:17 PM oh, the white interior is clean!
hey whats that box on the driverside kick panel?
65rangoon 05-04-2008, 08:23 PM at some point there were 2 speakers added. Im not sure if the original owner had them added or if my great gpa had them added after he bought the car.
65rangoon 05-04-2008, 08:25 PM heres another picture of the interior but a different crop. http://img404.imageshack.us/img404/8184/img2031tb2.jpg
and heres one of the dirty engine bay ha.
http://img100.imageshack.us/img100/3924/img2021ex4.jpg
i figure im going to leave it the way itis fornow and then eventuallymaybe clean up the engine bay a little.im not sure if i really want to do that though. leave it original or clean it up & make it look new?
Mustangdemon67 05-04-2008, 08:35 PM well theres nothin wrong with cleaning it up. you can repaint the air filter housing and valve covers. new hoses, maybe sparkplug wires, its all up to you, how far you want to take it
real original will only last for so long, eventualy hoses will crack and stuff will stop working[8D]
65rangoon 05-04-2008, 09:42 PM yea thats my problem, i know if i START it wont END haha. if i clean up a few things (IE paint the cleaner & valve covers) ill want to pull the engine and clean/paint/fix everything in there haha.
i either have to leave it the way it is for now or clean it completely haha. i have a bad habit of things like that, i cant just half ass it.
this is why ive left my DD's stock aside from when i had the grand prix i lowered it when i put new struts on it
Mustangdemon67 05-04-2008, 09:59 PM yup, that happens.
"ill just do this and ill be happy"
"well, maybe just this n this now"
and it never ends. but i like the color scheme the car has, the red and white. if i had that car i would try to keep it original as possible and fix what needs fixing when it comes about. but its your car, so whatever you see fit [sm=smiley20.gif]
65rangoon 05-17-2008, 07:42 PM ORIGINAL: true66gt
so why doesnt she just sell it to you for like 10k? i mean, she could just GIVE it to you. but 10k is fair if grandma is selling it. unless shes low on money and cant afford to "give" it to you as an inheritance.
welp thats the price shes selling it to me for. she came up with it i said sure why not. i paid my monte carlo off so that payment now becomes the mustang payment. get rid of one interest bearing loan to pay a non interest bearing loan that my gma is giving me haha.
she only wants $125 a month and i dont really care that its going to take something like 6.5 years to pay off haha. if first payment is 6-1-08 my last one will be 1-1-15 haha
its actually kind of nice, thats less then the monte was so it saves me money per month (granted pay off was like $2800) PLUS i got a raise which comes out to a decent amount per month so its not to bad.
now i just gotta get everything switched over to me title/registration wise as well as insurance.
pjlietz 05-17-2008, 09:48 PM Congrats man, that's a nice looking stang!
BA Mustang 05-17-2008, 10:15 PM Very nice looking stang! [sm=smiley20.gif]
guybored 05-17-2008, 10:25 PM beautiful car, you enjoy it. yeah if you start doing something you will getting into something else. but i think there is nothing wrong with it the way it is maybe some engine cleaner to get the dirt off.
zmetalmilitia 05-17-2008, 10:39 PM Man that is a clean lokking interior. I love the white/red interior. Lokks clean and really sharp. Nice car.
65rangoon 05-18-2008, 01:21 AM thanks guys ! i like it. ive been driving it the last two days a bit. Maybe 100 miles which 30 were going from gmas to my parents (back home in iowa, since i live 3 hours away currently).
havent done much to it. oil change, fuel filter change, new belts & ordered all 4 power steering hoses since the pressure line from the pump blew yesterday no sooner did i pull back into the garage. got lucky on that one ha.
Right now i just had a small hydraulic hose made up and then bent a peice of 12" brake line and connected the two so its driveable with power steering.
