Hey, fobra. Your mailbox is full, so I am going to have to go this route (sorry admins). this is a copy of e-mail that was sent back to me as your mailbox was said to be full reguarding where to get tires:
My experience is just go to a good local tire installation place and have them purchase and install. If you purchase them and have them shipped to you, the shipping alone will off-set any savings you would get by finding a good deal. You will also find that you will get better service from a shop if you purchase from them. As far as shops, look for a good local independent shop if you can. I DON'T recommend Sears, K-Mark, Costco or big name shop that includes tire sales as only a part of their business.
Give them your budget and what you would like out of your tires, and let them help you out. Steer away from ANY shop that says "X" brand is the best tire no matter what you want it to do. Or.... "Those suck, get these..." type of things. In general, stay as low a treadwear rating number as you can afford. The lower the number, the softer the tire, and hence better traction. Again, this is a general statement. Not ALL lower numbers will perform better than higher number tires. My PS2's are 220 and found them to be far better cornering tire than Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3's (rated at 280 treadwear). The Eagles DON'T like to turn, and don't hold a line nearly as well, as they "creep" off line during hard cornering.

You cannot compare treadwear ratings of tires of different manufactores, period. They are unrelated to eachother. You can only compare the treadwear rating of tires of the same manufactor. I also disagree on the F1 GS D3's performance, as do most reviews.

Dem's fightin' words but, to each his/her own
I have run both the F1's (for a little over a year) and currently running PS2's while riding on a complete Griggs GR-40 suspension system in my Saleen. As an exampe, look at pictures in my sig. You will find one of the "Fort Ross Twisties" in there. I regularly shoot those turns at and even 50 MPH on my PS2's (not an exageration) I was unable to do more than 35 comfortably on the Eagles. They just didn't hold the line well enough. I have found PS2's an unquestionalby better handling tire and far better at holding the line during a turn on everyday roads with various temperatures and such. This is only one persons opinion, mine to be exact , but stand by it firmly
Out of curiousity, have you run the PS2's? This is not said to be a challange or pre-cursor to and argument, but am just curious. I have NO DOUBT there are tires I would find better than my PS2's, but until I run them, I will never know. I did LOVE my Eagle Gatorbacks on put on my '85 GT many, many years ago. Back when you could still get a good performance tire in a 15"

Peace, Jazzer
Haha, 10 paces, turn and draw!
I'm surprised in your results on the 2 tires. The PS2's are no slouch thats for sure, just a little surprised at the large difference you had with them. I haven't had them on my car, but have done ride and drives with them on a BMW Z4 in a tire comparison test. I have worked for Goodyear for 18 years now, you can see I'm a fan boy :)

^ BTW..... you can have a wet coat of yellow and white lines and will not find either one on my tires
Also, the UTQGS was designed to give the smart shopper a general performance comparison between different manufactures tires
The Jazzer
Taken from that link UTQGS
Each tire manufacturer performs its own tests in these areas, following government prescribed test procedures. Each manufacturer then assigns grades that are branded on the tire. This is known as the Uniform Tire Quality Grade Labeling (UTQGL).
They key words there are in the 1st sentence. This is why you cannot use the treadwear rating in comparing 2 different manufactures.
