I am deciding on a Brenspeed Saleen SC kit. Stage 1 is rated at 5 psi of boost and should net me about 400 rwhp (which is my goal). Stage 2 is rated at 6.5 psi of boost and should net me about 425-430 rwhp. The difference is only $100, so cost is not an issue.

I've read that some people with Stage 2 are pushing more boost than that. For those of you with Stage 1 and Stage 2 kits what is your max boost and rwhp?

I know that its been said that the stock internals and driveline are safe for this boost & hp level. However, I plan to keep my Stang for the long haul and am wondering if I should lean towards the side of caution and go with the Stage 1.

you made a great decision going with the
brenspeed saleen s/c kit.

i would go stage 4 and run the 3.4 pulley.

good luck with whichever stage you go with....

Stop it mister.  (Plus the Stage 4 is the 3.0 pulley )

Brenspeed understates the boost at various levels by about 2 lbs. near as I can tell.  I have the Stage 3 (3.4 pulley) it is advertised at 8 lbs - it puts out 10.

If'n I were you I would not go any less than the Stage 2.  Like I said, I have the Stage 3 - Dave gave me a 'life' tune which I ran for 10 minutes before switching to the race tune which I've been running on my 'DD' since last October.

with the stage 4, he lays a foundation
for a future forged engine. running the
3.4 pulley, gives him a safe place to be

Okay, so do they give you different tunes to choose from? What are they (life, race, etc)? And at which octane (91 or 93)?

I don't have a s/c yet, so this is mostly 2nd hand info/research:

IF you ask most people on here they will tell you to go with the option that gives you the absolute most power possible but with a keen eye toward engine safety. Different people have different threshholds of risk - some ppl are comfy with pushing 410rhp, some with 440rhp, some with 475 and up.  Just make sure you get a custom tune with your set up. If you have a mechanic/tuner who is worth a sh!t, you can run run pleanty of hp safely.

Also try to figure out what your driving application is: daily driver, weekend warrior, 1/4 track monster, or track road racer.

Depending on your application, you may want to run different set ups.

Hope this helps.

If it is a daily driver that won't see too much track use, 400rhp is more than enough.  You likely won't get to use all that 400rhp on the street - unless you are violatin' some laws!

All tunes are for 93 octane.  Brent gave me the two tunes - "life" (more  conservative) and "race" (more timing/power)

Ohhhhh. I get it.  Sorry.

What Hammeron is saying is get all the gear that comes with the Stage 4 *but* run the 3.4 pulley and tune on your stock bottom end.

I actually considered going the same route but when I build the motor next year I may decide to go a different way on the F/I.

+1, I didn't look at the "stages" recently, but the best bang for your buck is the 3.6" pulley, or 8 psi (which is what it should hit by 6250rpm)

I say best bang for your buck b/c you get about 420 rwhp or so, and it won't cost you a new fuel system.  The 3.4" pulley will only get you an additional 20 hp, tops, but will cost you some sort of fuel upgrade.

I'm going with the Stage 3 with the BAP. I like the idea of the GT500 fuel system but everyone, including Brenspeed tells me the BAP is more than enough to handle under 500 rwhp. Where I'm having everything installed said to expect 470-480rwhp with the 3.4 pulley. The XCal 3 that I'm getting from Brenspeed will come with a tune, which they insisted on, but I'm getting my car dyno tuned at the shop I'm having the installation done at.

Unless that shop has already done many Saleen installs, then they should use Brent's tune as a starting point and modify it as necessary from there.

Are Brenspeeds tunes open for other shops to modify? I would of thought that a shops tunes would be locked in some way in order to prevent other shops "stealing" their tune. The shop I'm getting my setup installed at is Fastlane Motorsports here in N.C. and they came highly recommended.

Thanks for everyone's input.

I've decided to go with Stage 2, with 91 & 93 octane tunes.

I'm also going to find some wideband A/F and boost gauges. I don't think any other gauges are really necessary, right?

You'll be really happy with that stage, easily upgradeable in the future if you want.  When are you going up for the install? Oh yeah, I see you even have the right color car, they tend to make a little more h.p. than the others.

Good choice, I was pretty close to buying that kit before I went Whipple instead.  Just like the fuel pumps more and the look.

I am running 8psi on a super safe canned ford tune right now and make 420rwhp.  It is addictive and trust me you will want more.

For the money the stage 2 is a no brainer.  Alot of people will disagree but if you have the money buy the GT-500 fuel pumps.  BAPs do work and have for years but I have an electrical engineering background and I just dont like the thought of it.  Double the voltage, double the output, half the life.  Easy formula.

Now for gauges, alot of people have their opinions on this too.  Personally I am not a big A/F gauge fan for a restrained street car.  The gauge is only "correct" at WOT, and at that point you really wont be watching it.  Plus they have to be recalibrated about every 3000 miles, and that is a PITA when I put 16K a year on my car.

I will get one when I start to get a little more aggresive, but to each his own.

My personal set up is a Mech boost gauge, and Aeroforce gauge in an SOS dual gauge pod.  I love the Aeroforce because it reads like 100 parameters from the computer, plus for fun it has a performance measure program.  0-60time, 1/8, 1/4 time and MPH.  I dont know how accurate it is but it is fun.

Good luck.  IMO keep to 8psi and a conservative tune and your car will last as long as it would stock.  10psi and "good" tune 100k easy.  30psi and "good" tune 10 ft. LOL  you get the idea.

Considering your question was stage 1 or 2, I would go with a stage 2.

I started with stage 2 then 3 then 4 but a 3.2 pulley. I spent a lot extra money I didn't have to.  I would suggest doing stage 4 but dropping the pulley a size like hammeron suggested.  Reason I suggest it is going faster is majorly addicting!

I do suggest a wideband gauge for a street car I drove w/o one for months but since I got it I'm always watching my A/F.  I don't agree with what MustangGT0405 said about A/F gauges.  I change my oil every 5k miles so I don't mind calibrating the wideband, at the same time I top my fuels check my hoses for leaks and a ton of other maintenance stuff.

exx1976: "Unless that shop has already done many Saleen installs, then they should use Brent's tune as a starting point and modify it as necessary from there."

Brents tunes are locked out and can not be modified(not talking about the user config params).  They give you the .ll3 file you upload through liveload.

I have an aeroforce gauge and find it a ton of fun too, I also suggest a boost/vac gauge so you can see if anything is wrong.

Just my 2cents.

Stage 2 doesn't come with the BAP, that's only required for Stages 3 & 4. So I won't have to upgrade fuel pumps.

Brenspeed was booked through sometime towards the end of June, so I'm doing the install myself. I have access to a shop with more than enough tools, a lift and an air compressor all with no time constraints.

I think I'll be happy with the Stage 2. For me the concern was more about longevity, not necessarily maxing out on hp.
