Well after seeing it on mp3car i had to have one i built a car pc that replaced my shaker 500 head unit it has a 7" touch screen and fits in the dash except the amp i used to power the speakers it has hd radio and sirius radio also useing Iguidance for gps also running a front end that ties all this together in a easy touch interface sorry for the smuges in the screen cant keep my self from touching it!!
also useing media player classic so i can play any video format under the sun!!
Nice. What linux front end did you use? Also, where did you mount the motherboard/hdd? Did you build a SSF case for it or did you take the bottom half of a laptop? Iv been wanting to do something like this..
see here for the guy that did it first he makes a case that conforms to fords Double din standard im using windows with a front end called roadrunner that ties gps winamp etc together and has user made skins for it
im using a msi fuzzy g945 mini-itx board with a moble core2duo intel cpu 2gig of ram and a 320g laptop harddrive.
this computer in all in the dash except for the amp thats driving the speakers. so if you didnt know better you would thinks is a oem nav system
its on par with the shaker system, tho not as loud because im using the computers onboard volume, and had to balance the inputs from the hdradio and sirius, the way i have it set up now you can turn it all the way up and not make your ears bleed, my main focus was not to have a loud system just one that comapred to the stock radio and had all the functions i wanted. im currently looking at adding tpms monitoring to the computer so i can see the tire pressure and temps on my computer.

Well in a effort to make my make my Car pc better i built a power switch and a valet switch inside the center console so when my car is in for service i can keep the shop monkeys from messing with my pc
I just take the face off and don't have to worry about it. I understand the two switches but what is the other part that was cut out unevenly? A file is great for the final finishing to even up the cuts.
maybe you can get a program that logs what happens to the car. that way you can set it up before you take it in for service and see if the techs are beating the crap out of your car. if they are you have proof of it all!
I cant take the face off this its a Computer built into the dash thats a 7" touch screen its custom built except the metra kit i used to make it look like it belonged there. it probably has cost me about 2k in parts after its all said and done. that thing next to the switches is a 4 port usb hub i know it looks unfinished but im going to built a power circut for it and when i take it out to do that ill epoxy it in place and put some body filler around it and paint so it looks like it was always there
I hope you don't think that I don't like it, that is not the case. The time and effort you put into it came across with its clean stock looking appearance, you did a very good job to say the least.... I have seen others try and not get such a nice package out of it. I understand the face is not removable, I was just saying what I do to fix it. IF you wanted to get a little more creative I hade considered using a relay and an unused output on my alarm to make a valet-safe mode that would look completly normal to any person but would completely render the system unusable.
I commented on the usb port looking unfinished as nothing more then a bit of constructive critisism since that is the only point that I could see anything wrong with. I made a usb port for another member here to fit into his coin holder. It is on page 11 of my cardomain page, came out perty nice... Let me know if you want something similar and I can mold it into the dash and make it look like it belongs there for ya.
sorry, i wasnet trying to come acrossed like that, i thought by one of your posts that it was a standard head unit with a removable face, im happy with the valet switch as it is. its inside the center console and not readily visable unless you looke in there, i figure that most shop people wont go looking for the switch. i put the switches and the usbhub together in a hour or two just to get it that part going as i had it freeze one time and didnt have a way to restart it as the power supply was on a 2 hour hard off timer. i have changed the power setting on the power supply so it cuts power off much sooner but still wanted to have a switch so i didnt have to pull over and shut the car off to get it to restart. i also left the stock harness intacted as well i used a metra wiring kit to power the psu off the radio circut as it supplys more then enought current to power it all except for the speakers amp of course.
as to the usb hub im going to try and make it sit flush and use some body putty so smooth out the lines so all you will see is the usb ports im also going to use a relayed circut to power the usb hub i have a 5v 3a vreg that i will tap into the power port in the center console to use so when i tuen on the car itll will power the usb hub and not drain my battery when the car is not on. thanks for the offer tho.
