The 65 Shelby had a hi-po engine, I believe 50 horses over the regular 289. Total was 270hp if I recall correctly. All scoops were functional and the front suspension geometry was improved and beefed up. Disc brake up front... Of course, posi in the back, bullit wheels with better tires. Extra gauges inside etc...
There was a lot more bang for the buck than the now Shelby GT joke

V-6 is for real drivers. Go buy a Jetta if you want gas mileage and a chicks car. Buy a V-8 Mustang if you have no driving ability and need the extra horsepower to compensate and feel like you''''''''re fast.

It does. It burrows the bumpers from the CS. My beef with this car is that it doesn't have performance stuff over the GT. 15/20 horses, whoopy! No brake improvement, shocks (only lowered) It does have the Hurst shifter... Fun.
Exactly... New cars are about money. Back in the day you wouldn't see that sh1t. Maybe, I actually don't know what I'm talking about.

Not quite right, the GT350 did have the HiPo, but it was upgraded over a normal GT HiPo, 306hp instead of 271hp. I guess it doesnt really matter for alot of us, we werent around when the Shelbys were first out like my dad. I think his biggest reason was he wanted a real shelby, and not put up with all the bs that surrounds owning an old one. He used to have a 66 GT350 and a 68 GT500KR vert, and has plenty of money to buy another one if he wanted. He says he like having a new one because he can drive it all he wants, and on longs trips and just not have to orry about it as much.

I really dont get it, my dad has one and its a beautiful car. He didnt buy it to get a "good deal," He bought it because he wanted another Shelby, and a real one, not a 2007 SVT Cobra with Shelbys name on it. People say its a rip off compared to a Mustang GT, but everything is almost identical to a 65 GT350. Both are GTs modded in LV by Shelby, both had moderate hp gains over the Mustang GT (GT350 was a little more though), suspension upgrades and of couse the graphics. As for msrp, a new Mustang GT is about $30K, where as a Shelby GT is $45K. A 65 GT was about $3k and a GT350 was about $4.5K. Notice any similarities? But Ill admit the hoodscoop is kinda cheap though...
You have to remember here though that the '65 GT had to engine options. One being the A code 289 rated at 225 hp and the other being the K code Hi-Po 289 rated at 271 hp. Now out of all the 1965 Mustangs, the Hi-Po 289 was only put in about 1 % of them, and only around 10% of 1965 Mustangs were factory GT's. So how many actual GT's had the K-code? I can't remember exact numbers but I believe it was somewhere around 5-10%, but I could be wrong. What I'm trying to say is that the '65 GT350 was a better "bang for the buck" for most people because most people didn't have a K-code GT, most others were A-codes.

Don't forget that it was also a 9" rearend as well.
The Shelby GT is a badged GT, let's face it. So, for 10K in price difference, not only can I buy the fancy decals, body parts, and the other misc items, I can toss on a Supercharger, and get it tuned. Go figure....
Plus, since I've ran into 3 Shelby GT's, they seem to think because it says Shelby, it is soooo much better then a GT, or faster for some odd reason. Again, go figure.....

While Shelby actually had something to do with the GT, Shelby to the best of my knowledge had nothing to do with the GT500, which was a SVT car until Shelby came on board.
There is *NOTHING* performance wise on the Shelby GT that makes it worth the money. If Shelby's name is worth the added price and you feel like owning a car that may end up being worth 2,500 someday like a regular GT, or if you want to gamble and think it may be worth something.....sure there is a lot of fun to be had in owning a car that is to many people a piece of history.
I think the GT500 with Shelby's name on it really soured a lot of Ford & SVT fans.
I would have loved to get my hands on a GT500 a couple years ago. Ford was talking about a short 2 year run, limited production numbers etc, nothing different than the Terminator really. Instead, Shelby's name is slapped on it, mark-ups of 25k or more for nothing more than Shelby's name.
Sorry, that ripped the car right out from under me just because of Shelby's name. I even thought about picking up a GT500 that was only 5k over MSRP, but then I read that Ford was going to do a 5 year run with the GT500. What could it possibly be worth after a 5 year run? I thought it was supposed to have limited production like the 03/04?
The GT500 just turned me off from anything Shelby.

if the new edge bodystyle were to continue until say 2007, do you still think the terminator would have only been a two year run?

A lot of people don't like Shelby. He's a crook with his fake charity that never seems to hand out the cash they rake in. Shelby's more of a crook than your average dealership.

Yes. When Coletti bailed out of Ford, it was the end of the true SVT. The Termi and the Lightning were his signature. He had to fight and put up with BS to make those cars a reality, so much that,in the end, he quit.
The GT500 pisses me off in a way because with the Shelby name, a car that is $42K msrp, is now in the $60K. They're coming down a bit, but not enough still.
We still need a 400hp Stang, something between the GT and the Cobra. Not this Bullit crap or Shelby GT. Was hoping that the Bullit would be that car... Nope.
motor that blows **** @ 450rwhp + meh 5 speed + not factory supercharged = ****
