I have a 1999 cobra that rods went through the block both sides and oil pan. My car has been down for months and its starting to get on my nerves real bad now. Summer is coming up and i dont wanna be driving my 54hp 1969 bug. I am also looking for work at the time so i an just trying to figure out some routes that i can go to put my car back on the road.
Whats the differents between the gt blocks (94-02) and the cobra blocks (94-02)? i know that the 99 has the allu block. Could i use a Mark VIII Block? Could i get a gt block and put my heads and intake?
If you guys could help my on these questions or if you know anything else.

You're better off going with a 93-98 Teksid aluminum block that came in the Mark VIII and 96-98 Cobras. You can usually find one on ebay pretty cheap. The Teksid block is considerably stronger than the WAP (aka NVH) block that came in your car. According to Sean Hyland, it's also considerably stronger than any of the cast iron blocks. Just get some decent rods and pistons this time so you don't end up back in this same position 6 months from now.

putting a GT bottom end in would just be dumb.... ur stock cobra came with a forged crank...
If i was in ur position, i would just do a built bottom end. remember, ur heads WILL have to be machined, because there is a 99% chance they were damaged when u blew up ur engine... that might require new valves, and whatnot as well...
in 94-95 the GT's were still the pushrod 5.0(215hp) and the cobra was a pushrod 5.0 with GT 40 Heads and intake manifold(240hp), in 96 ford came out with the modular 4.6 V8 the was Single overhead cam(260hp 16 valve or 2v for short) and also in 96 for the cobras ford used an all forged bottom end with the big Dual Overhead Cams(305hp 32 Valves or 4v). in 1999 Both engines were basically the same but updated, the GT head were ported better(P.I swap is 99-04 GT heads) and the cobra had a different ECM and Intake which made it 320hp. basically sums it up lol
there is no structural differences between 96-04 iron blocks, their internals/heads make the difference. Early 2v had a 6 bolt crank, and different head bolt pattern made at the romeo plant. Later blocks recieved the 8 bolt crank and more bolts in the heads. Cobras recieved the same block, but with fully forged internals. the Teksid block came in 96-99 cobras (only ~60% of 99 cobras though) and the mark VIII recieved the teksid block but a few minor alterations are needed to transplant it. 2001 cobras recieved a less potent Windsor casting of the block, but while beefier it used inferior casting techniques and is good to 900hp.
Depending on your plans, a built iron shortblock will leave you with all the strength you need.

+1 for that man....SVTperformance might have some 96-99 teksid blocks...or even a shortblock

The iron blocks are hands down the strongest. But most poeple never come close to the power limit of the aluminum bocks, so if you can get one for a decent price, go aluminum, it's lighter. Any 96-04 block will work. You just need to build the insides. Use forged everything with ARP hardware and you'll have good setup. The Mark block is identical to the cobra, just different internals and different intake.

All i really wanna do right now it to get my car back on the road. tired of just paying payment and not even being able to drive it. so if i get a Mark VIII engine can i just put my 99 cobra heads and intake? in the long run i wanna get and 03/04 cobra engine for it but that about an year or so down the road. summer is hitting soon and i don't wanna be drivign the bug all summer long...

Buy a mark short block from ebay. It should work and sometime just put a forged rotating assembly into it. pitmitch910 The 96 cobra DOES NOT have forged internals only the crankshaft is forged and the rest of your statements arent exactly on the dot either.In 1996 ford put the 215 hp Sohc engine in the gt to replace the 5.0 ford put the better designed 260 hp 4.6 sohc in the 1999-2004 gt's.The 1996-98 cobra has 305 hp and the 99/01 have 320. The 1996-01 cobra's have a forged crank and are all dohc. The 2000 cobra R the 2003-2004 cobra and the gt500 are the only ones that have a fully forged bottom end. Not to crucify you or anything I just want to make sure anyone who bothers to read this gets their facts straight.

You're right about most people never coming close to the power limits, but the iron blocks are not stronger. In his book, Sean Hyland states that the 4.6L iron blocks all suffer from the same problem: not enough material around the bores. He goes on to say, "While iron blocks are certainly adequate for street engines, high-HP race engines should be built using aluminum blocks." He's specifically referring to the Teksid blocks and the block he manufactures though.
Of course if you're not looking to make more than 900 hp, any of the 4.6 blocks will work fine, iron or aluminum. The iron blocks will be cheaper. You'll just take 85 pounds off the front wheels if you go aluminum.

Yes you can just swap you heads, intake, TB, etc. and get going. But it won't be the same as a Cobra. The compression is a little lower so you'll be a few ponies shy of the Cobra. The Mark doesn't have a forged crank, but I don't think this matters since an unforged crank can handle much more power than the unforged rods and pistons in that engine. In other words, if it breaks, it won't be the crank, the rods and pistons will go before you break the crank. The biggest thing to consider though is the time and labor to do the swap. If you're going to do all that, you might as well build it right.
