View Full Version : Mustang V6 vs. Challenger SE
Wishbone 04-30-2008, 08:20 AM Just reading up on the challenger. Their V6 is smaller than ours at 3.5L but Dodge is claiming 250 hp. That seems like a lot for that size engine. Challenger appears to be a bit heavier than the Mustang. I wonder how these stack up in 0-60 and quarter mile times?
ODDYSEY 04-30-2008, 08:45 AM 250 base horsepower, and the car itself weighs more. They make no V6 that is faster than ours, the only Challenger faster than our 4.0 is the R/T V8.
Wishbone 04-30-2008, 09:03 AM Well that is 40 more hp than what we have. Probably would come down to the driver. You can check the specs here...

knucklebuster 04-30-2008, 09:38 AM My wife has a 08 3.5 HO charger. I can tell you that it is faster than my 4.0 stang, and it wieghs 1000lbs more.

The Challenger SE base weight is 3,720 lbs.
The Mustang V6 base weight is 3,300 lbs.
That extra 40hp needs to compensate for the 420lb difference. So I do agree that it may just come down to the driver.

I disagree I have beat many HO chargers, the "feel" may seem faster but the numbers don't lie :)
ODDYSEY 04-30-2008, 10:20 AM Correction: I thought we were talking about CHARGERS not Challengers. I don't know about the Challenger, except that it looks really good :)
feejay 04-30-2008, 11:55 AM It doesnt seem like alot, especially if it is 3v or 4v. The 3.6L Duratec Ford uses in the Edge and the Fusion is rated at 260hp.
tedBalog 04-30-2008, 12:07 PM They made a 3.5L Duratec and a 3.7L Duratec the 3.5 making 265Hp and the 3.7 making 273.. All DOHC

The new 3.5L duratech they engineered to be able to go up to 4.0L and handle twin turbo's DOHC and put out 365 HP.
basketballord 04-30-2008, 12:56 PM The 3.5L in the dodges are pretty peppy. anybody know what kind of torque those things make?
I think driver would be the main factor, but i think you'd have to have a CAI and tune if you wanted to keep up. i am surprised the base challenger is only 420 lbs more than ours. that thing looks huge.

However, I would be surprised to see the TT duratec (TwinForce) come into fruition as far as production vehicles go. I'll believe it when I see it.
Redneck Chinaman 04-30-2008, 02:04 PM so the challenger will have the same engine as the charger sxt, does any one smell a dog eat dog scenario here? It kinda reminds me of the corvette and camaro.

I noticed it's a 4-speed automatic. Would that make a difference? Seems like it would make it a tad slower.
Ratrodder85 04-30-2008, 04:24 PM I work for Chrysler, and drive the 3.5 chargers and 300s pretty often. They don't seem quite as quick as my car, but they are quite a bit bigger. The numbers say 250 hp@6400 rpm, and 250 ft-lbs at 3800 rpm. That said, the challenger is a beautiful car.
I have checked out one of the first SRT8s and everything is amazing except the interior. It's boring and looks exactly like the Charger. Hopefully by the time they release other models such as the R/T and v6 next year they will fix that.
05nightrider 04-30-2008, 05:15 PM arent the challengers going to have a bit more of a race tune? with that said we should have a cai and tune to be even with add ons.. ours just didnt come from the factory that way and thus lower cost to us. that gives us a good extra20+ ponies and close to it in terms of quickness not necessarily power... plus i would think the only option tranny wise, a 4spd auto, would not make it extremely economical... and if they are treating 4th gear as O/D (like our 5th) then we should have an advantage there. then again i might just be full of crap haha...
on the other hand.. it is a GORGEOUS car... props to dodge for really capturing the muscle car retro look... chevy i dont think has done it with the camaro (if it ever comes out hehe).. too modern...
but if they are saying that its going to start at 24 or 25 grand, theres a lot i can do with my six to make it quicker for 4-6 grand. or i could just buy a GT. ill stick to the classic american icon. thank you!
logicbombx 04-30-2008, 05:48 PM I've read that 210 HP for the V6 is underratted any truth to that.
Wishbone 04-30-2008, 06:34 PM Well yeah when the new Civic Si 4 cylinder has 200 hp.
landon.moss 04-30-2008, 06:34 PM i love the new challengers, even tho they're HUGE-actually kinda like the se better than the rt, etc.same as how i think the v6 stangs look better than the v8s- was gonna wait for one since i'm a mopar guy, but i love the mustangs too, so when i had a chance to get my 05 i did...waited for 3 years - and it was def worth it[8D]
phunnyguy 04-30-2008, 06:55 PM uummm since when is dodge going to make a v6 challenger????...i know the charger comes in v6.....but i think the challenger will only be a v8......
landon.moss 04-30-2008, 06:58 PM 1st year all challengers will be hemi 8s with autos i believe....2nd prod year will include a v6, a de-tuned v8, and the addition of the manual trans

StreamlineStang 04-30-2008, 08:35 PM It doesn't really matter on how many litters, my 96 Mitsubishi 3000GT (N/A DOHC V6) is a 3 litter and puts down 222hp at the crank. It's all in the design of the engines. Ford really hasn't made a LOT of changes to their motors over the years, at least compared to the other companies that is.

210 is at the crank....at the wheels its between 180 and 190....cai tune and sual will bring it to around 225 at the crank and probably about 200-210 at the wheels...this is based ona 5 % to 10% loss from the crank to the wheels...

According to their website, they are coming out with a V6 dubbed the Challenger SE.
Check the link below;
http://www.dodge.com/en/2009/challenger/performance/engine/
It had this to say about the SE's engine;
3.5 liter High-Output SOHC V6
A dual-tuned intake manifold utilizes a short runner valve, bringing you 250 horses at 6800 rpm and 250 lb-ft of torque at 3800 rpm. Partnered with a sophisticated electronic throttle control system that tailors the pedal-movement response based on operating conditions, plus platinum-tip spark plugs and the coil-on plug ignition system, you'll reap benefits like more consistent speed and reduced emissions. (standard on SE).

That's just for Manuals.
Autos suffer about 15% drivetrain loss.
Hense one of the reasons I bought a manual.

there supposed to be a general rule of 15% drivetrain loss (20% for autos) which would lead one to think that our cars are underrated. 15 % would give you more like 220-225.

Thats a whole lot of RPM to reach the max HP. Our 210 is at 5300 rpm.
For quickness I always consider torque to be more important thenHPand the Challenger only has 10 more but weights 400+ pounds.
ODDYSEY 05-01-2008, 11:21 AM Was it Shelby who said, HP sells cars, but torque wins races. If I ever bought a Challenger, I would have to get the big ol 6.1.

Now all we need is for Pontiac to get off of their butts and remake the Firebird or the Trans-Am. It would be nice to see some moreAmerican Muscle taking back the streets! I'm so sick of Toyota's', Honda's', Accra's' etc. Years ago you hardly saw a foriegn car now you see 7 out of 10! [:@]
The Potato 05-01-2008, 03:21 PM Or better yet, remake the GTO so it actually looks like a muscle car.

05MustangSally 05-01-2008, 03:24 PM I'd prefer to see the Firebird over the Trans. But man, I WILL buy that Challenger. That's definitely a "Go-balls-out" car! Gotta have it...and I don't think I could get one without a V8. That's a whole different car right there. Not hatin on the Mustang or my Mustang because those are #1 for me. But I'd love to have that new Challenger as 2nd car! And love the picture...but Camaro does not belong in the middle front. Should be Stang and Challenger in front with the Camero in the back middle lol ;)

+2 on the "Goat" needing a new body.......They need to stop looking like Grand-Am's.
Obliv 05-03-2008, 11:39 PM Eh, the 3.5l charger does 0-60 in like 8 seconds. I dont see the v6 challenger competing with us now, let alone when the new v6 comes out....
Those cars are simply too heavy. The SRT-8 is barely faster then a stock GT....
I dont see where all the hype is comming from.
2007Grabber 05-04-2008, 06:38 AM All this talk about the Trans Am and Firebird reminded me of a pic I have been holding on to for a long time wondering where and when it will be put to use. For all of us Smokey and the Bandit fans, I give you the new version:

I would love to see a remake of the movie with some new cars in it including the one pictured above and maybe some Chargers as police cars. The ultimate cast would be Jessica Alba as Carrie(could you imagine seeeing her change out of a wedding dress in the back seat?), Larry the Cable Guy as Cledus(who else would fit?), Burt Reynolds switching roles and playing Sheriff Buford T Justice(why not?), and Mathew McConaughey as the Bandit (he's got the distinct laugh and accent that the Bandit had in the original). C'mon hollywood get busy!
landon.moss 05-04-2008, 10:30 AM personally, i'd rather see the firebird/TA over the camaro...all chevy cars are pretty ugly...they ruined the vette with that new style, the ssr is pretty cool though, the HHP panel (without the side windows) is cool, but no power...i WISH plymouth was still in business to re-make the roadrunner or cuda - never really liked the challenger, but if i ever can, i'll get one - or, maybe just get a new 6.1 FI Hemi with all the computer junk, etc. and put it in my '71:D

Yeah I saw that picture a few years ago and showed it to a friend of mine. He got very excited hoping they would build it. He owns a 1978 Trans Am like the one in the movies.
If you notice the front where the lights are and the side with the humpare very similar to the new Camaro concept.
I wished they would build this!
