View Full Version : installing subs and & amp to stock system of a 2003 mustang... how??
college88 04-30-2008, 03:01 AM Hello everyone!! i finally got my first mustang!! woo hoo!! 2003 mustang gt manual trans and red in color! :)
Anyways, my question is, how do i install aftermarket amp to a stock stereo? will i need to use an inline converter?
has anyone ever done this yet?
pics and advice is HIGHLY appreciated :) thanks!!!
ssv6ponypower 04-30-2008, 06:29 PM if i were you i would get an aftermarket headunit it makes it much easier plus it makes your speakers sound much better plus it allwos you to control your amp from the head unit its very nice plus it looks better than the stock unit
ttocs 04-30-2008, 11:18 PM you can do either or.... Let us know what you have, what you want and what you are going to get and we can help you hook it up..

If you want to just throw in some low end (subwoofers) You'll need the following
Box
Subwoofers
Amplifier
LOC ( Line Output Converter )
Wiring kit (at least 4 AWG)
A new H/U changes things juuuuust a little bit but will make it easier for upgrading the rest of your system later. Like was previously stated, BEFORE YOU DO ANYTHING, let us know your goals and budget, and we'll get you going in the right direction.
college88 05-08-2008, 01:16 AM Hey guys, just got back from Colorado... but yeah, back on topic:
I have 2 Memphis 12inch subwoofers... 800 watts a piece, together 1600 watts peak.
I had a custom ported box made for my car that follows the air space specs of the subs.. i bought a competition amp kit with the 4 gauge power and ground wires... it came with the RCAs and all that good stuff to get it connected... i also bought a PAC line output converter, and now I just need my amp.. any recommendations?

Uhhh!!! 800 wrms or 400 wrms? either way you're going to need a HOA, a yellow top, and at least a 2-5 farad cap

Obviously you shouldn't be giving stereo advice. Nothing you have said is correct.

THIS IS THE FIRST POST OF YOURS I AGREE WITH BUT I THINK BOTH OF YOU NEED TO READ MORE AND TYPE LESS........
caps are useless, stay away from then unless you are using them as cross overs. The power ratings are not nearly important when choosing an amp as the number of voice coils and the impedence of each of them(in ohms).
Hlistr_07RR 10-07-2008, 01:35 AM I'm looking to do the same thing with my car, probably just 1 10 inch sub, maybe 2 and keep my stock head unit so pics will be greatly appreciated of how you do this.

Google is your friend - mustang mach 460 sub install = http://www.mustangworld.com/ourpics/fcar/despeeds1.htm
ttocs 10-07-2008, 09:58 AM the only part that is really bad on that is that his wiring is messy. He has no idea how to run wires and he also didn't put the power cable through the firewall grommet correctly but it give you an idea of where things are.

I'm still a noob, but hey look who's talking! Besides I know caps are no good and I didn't read the whole thread. I just skimmed it :D

welcome noob! Stick around and there is alot of good learning for free here.
First lesson is that caps are useless, a band aid on a problem that will not heal.
JayMax03 10-08-2008, 11:49 AM yeah I tried to tell all my friends that but they want to take the cheap way. Here is my solution: The BIG3 upgrade, HOA, and a Yellow Top Optima Battery
ttocs 10-08-2008, 01:49 PM HOA = home owners association? just kidding....
decked07 10-09-2008, 02:27 PM I did after market amps with a factory head unit. It sounds GREAT! I have Rockford Fosgate amps with Alpine speakers and a Rockford fosgate 12" sub. I had it professionally installed. I spent some money but a lot less head ache.
