Default what special tools do i need t

I never rebuilt anything before, and I was thinking I'd go down to the junkyard and rip out a 87-93 5.0 engine and t5 tranny and then takeeverything apart to see what it all looks like and then I could tell if i think i could rebuild a engine or a tranny. But how many special tools besides standard ratchet/wrench set do I need to get everything apart? could someone make a list so i can estimate the cost of my educational experience?

You're going to want a shop manual - and not just a haynes/chilton (they'll do, but better can be found)

You'll also want a couple of decent torque wrenches one for inch-pound stuff and one for higher figures

Engine stand
cherry picker
calipers/feeler guage
pulley pullers
iirc there's a special tool for removing cam bearings
there's gotta be more

go to the libary and their are several awsum rebuild book...copy the pages you need so no oil gets on the book..

you need a 1/2 drive socket set to make things easier plus a break bar..if you going to put this thing back together mark your rods and main caps. use lil rubber hose on the rods bolts so when you pull it out you don't scratch the crank jounals. we did somethin like this when I went to school...

I've only taken apart a motorcycle tranny, and I didn't use any special tools.

I did a 5 spd for a 2300cc ranger truck. The major special tool I remember was for the rear case bearing. It was a special gear puller to deal with the long output shaft. I came up with a "work around". I took the jaws from a gear puller and bolted them between two rod bearing caps, so they couldslide downaround the shaft. This gave me enough length so I could grab the con rod caps with another puller. That was over 10 years ago. There may be a rental puller now.
