18" or 20"

hotproperty94 -> 18" or 20" (4/28/2008 8:11:12 AM)

I need help deciding between 18' 19" or 20" rims on my 94' mustang gt conv that is stock.  I think 20" will be way to big and ghetto, not to mention a problem with rubbing but I could be wrong.  My BF wants me to do 20" so I could use a little advice from you guys as to the size I should be looking at.

Jazzer The Cat -> RE: 18" or 20" (4/28/2008 8:51:03 AM)

I don't recommend 20"s on Stangs, as I think they limit tire/wheel options. They fit well on S197's ('05+ Mustangs), but still prefer 18" or maybe 19"s.

Wheels are a subjective decision, so find some you like and can get them in whatever size you decide. Depends on type of driving you do as to what tires you want. Do you want a nice comfortable ride or like performance on corners and such? Seems to me, if I may be so bold, you just want it to look nice, and b/f wants to "pimp your ride" [sm=pimp.gif].

Do some looking around and hit Tire Rack.com and they will give you lots of nice options and find tires suited for your needs [:)]

i got 20" on my car and i dont have a problem with rubbing but as for 19's they cost just as much as a 20" wheel maybe even more because they are an odd size as for 18" they still look pretty good and they alow for more rubber which gives a smoother ride than the 20 but in the end it comes down to what you think looks good

Obviously your bf doesn't know about cars. 20" would not look good and would ride like **** on a 94. On a s197, 20s are fine and the norm.

hotproperty94 -> RE: 18" or 20" (4/30/2008 7:40:24 PM)

HaHa he is going to love that=)  Thanks, I needed a little backup on this one.  I'm sure some people can pull it off, but I just don't think my car could.

Koehn -> RE: 18" or 20" (4/30/2008 8:07:39 PM)

I wouldn't recommend anything 20"+ in chrome.  It looks wayyy too ghetto.  I'd go 18's in the shiniest chrome possible with the AR's you're planning to get. Then pick up a set of exhaust that's not too obnoxious and you'll be set to impress!!

Get us a pic of the final product!  Good luck HP!

Koehn -> RE: 18" or 20" (4/30/2008 8:11:14 PM)

And your bf isn't totally wrong.  My girlfriend (my avatar pic) told me NOT to go 20's, but I picked up a set of them anyway.  She doesn't mind them at all...because they're a black color and match the car well to give off a muscle car look.  I'll get some pics up ASAP.

^ 20s on a s197 and a 94 are completely different body styles smart guy. Are wheel wells aren't even close to each other in size and our cars sit up much higher factory. Guess the newbs got to learn.

Koehn -> RE: 18" or 20" (5/1/2008 1:52:04 PM)

I totally agree.  20's don't look good on a pre-S197 stang.  Someone tried to pull it off here in the Iowa City area and it looks ridiculous.

hotproperty94 -> RE: 18" or 20" (5/2/2008 7:52:44 PM)

I totally agree about the 20's and have enjoyed rubbing it in=)   So considering exhaust is my next move and you mentioned it, what do you recommend?

rob3980 -> RE: 18" or 20" (5/3/2008 7:38:43 AM)

Well its your car so if you dont want to do 20's dont. From what I read on the forums most of the people with 04's and lower go with 17's or 18's me myself I went with 20's and have no rubbing issues and my car is lowered, but in the end its up to you. If you go 18's then go 18x9 in the front and 18x10 in the rear. same with the 20's or you could always do 18x9 in the front and 20x10 in the rear. Your choice! What wheels are you looking at?

Jazzer The Cat -> RE: 18" or 20" (5/3/2008 7:53:18 AM)

As far as exhaust, check to confirm smog requirements in MI. You may be required to run catalytic converters, but I don't think so. If so, recommend high-flow cats that should be smog-legal, help the car breath better and give a more throaty sound when your Gianna Meliani's get heavy [;)]

Do you want real loud or just egg-on granny in her '72 Pinto wagon piping you at the stoplight? [sm=gears.gif]

Post this question in the Pipes Boost and Juice section of MF's for some good recommendations.

Get a X or H pipe, and like Jazzer said if you want to be within the smog regulations of your state you may have to get a catted x or h pipe but if you dont care you can get a off road one (I reccommend the Off Road). Besides the x or h pipe get a good Dual Catback exhaust system a few good ones are made by Flowmaster, Magnaflow, Borla and Bassani im sure there are others too or you can just buy the mufflers and have a local exhaust shop Fab one up for ya.

Koehn -> RE: 18" or 20" (5/3/2008 10:59:53 AM)

Go with what Jazz and Rob both say.  If you want tough sounding exhaust with a low tone I'd recommend Flowmasters.  I had some Flowmaster American Thunders for my 05 GT vert and they sounded good, especially during acceleration.  But I wanted more obnoxious sounding exhaust so I went with SLP Loudmouths and they fit the bill...loud!  If you want headache causing/piss off your neighbors type exhaust, go with an off-road x or h pipe with Boomtubes or SLP's.  If I were you, I'd look at Flows, Bassani, or have your local muffler shop fab up a straight pipe with a 3.5-4" tip, any of those would sound good.

rob3980 -> RE: 18" or 20" (5/3/2008 12:09:35 PM)

You could also go on You Tube and do a search for v8 Mustang Exhaust clips, they will list what mods they have and then you can listen to thier exhaust and figure out from there what one you like the best. If it were me I would do the Off Road H or X pipe with Flowmaster Dual Catback Exhaust, but thats just my opinion.

hotproperty94 -> RE: 18" or 20" (5/4/2008 8:20:13 AM)

Once again thank you sooooo much for the advice.   It's much easier for me to decide on the exhaust and you guys gave me plenty of help!!!  Ok I think i'm done bothering you with my posts, you can all relax now=)
