The other day I was goofing around and I was trying to show off. Long story short, I was tached at 5500 rpms and misgeared from 3rd to 2nd. I screwed up and hit the clutch with my foot on the gas and pegged 7500rpms. It seems to be running ok today. What damage could I have done?

IF you didn't peg the rev limiter you should be OK

The rev limiter is there to protect the motor.  It is well above 6200 rpms.  Most likely you are fine but if you are constantly over reving the motor you may start to create damage.  I should have been clear when I said shut down.  It does not shut down all the way.  It will start to stall until it drops below the set rev limit.

All in all you should be fine.  Besides hitting 7500 on the tach what is worring you?

That is all that is worrying me. I really appreciate your input as I don't know alot about engines. I just never heard the engine whine that loud and it made me wonder if I screwed it up. Thanks again.

06 on the stock tune?  If so that's gotta be a record (at least that anyone admits to)... I'm sure you experienced some detonation way out there since I've personally witnessed stock sc tunes detonate at 5k or so.

I thought I read somewhere that our transmissions have a lockout function that would prevent you from downshifting into too low of a gear.  Maybe one of the more knowledgeable members can affirm or disprove this.

I might not have the exact number right, 7500, but all I know is that the tach was in an area it had never been before. It was not a rev I want to hear anytime soon. Look, I have a car I don't know much about and I just want to make sure I didn't do any long term damage. Forgive my idiot ignorance, but what is a detonation, maybe I had one.

When I realized I misgeared,  a split second, I made another mistake of hitting the clutch with the gas on and that is when the needle went nuts. Don't hold me to the 7500 but it was not good.

Considering many of the members here that drag race every other weekend, I'm sure they @#$%^&$%^&* -up a lot worse than you did repeatedly. I can't imagine with all the max effort times you here of in the 1/4 mile, that your one time slip up caused damage, if there is no evidence of it now. Just my 2 cents. Erik

I agree with everyone else. One time won't really do harm if it was only for a few seconds.

Best therapy for instances such as these...........forget about it!

There's not a lot you can justify doing (invasively) to find out if you did "anything" to your motor without any noticeable symptoms (e.g. new sounds, different performance, etc...).

As long as it is not repeated multiple times, it should be perfectly fine
