Starting this fall there should be a Federal law requiring all highschool students to take the bus to and from school.

Why should all of those extra gallons of gas be wasted, causing more demand, so they can look "cool."  Hard working parents have to pay more for that wastefulness to get the gas they need in order to get to and from work.

V-6 is for real drivers. Go buy a Jetta if you want gas mileage and a chicks car. Buy a V-8 Mustang if you have no driving ability and need the extra horsepower to compensate and feel like you''''''''re fast.

College students don't have a tax dollar paid bus that stops for them in front of their door like high school students have.

Ya know that A LOT of places have no bus service for schools right?

I would much rather have the government not place any restrictions on gas or oil.  The government would manage to screw it up somehow.

We'll make an exception for those students.

I lived close enough to my school that it was too close for the buses to run. And in no way in hell am I going to wake up early for school and walk in freezing temperatures.

It's bright though, lower gas demand, raise diesel demand, no one needs diesel right?

Putting 30 students on a diesel powered bus instead of 30 seperate cars being driven will use less oil overall.  Multiply that by thousands of schools.

You are princess.

When i was in CA i had to walk a mile to school. Kids...i swear " But its too hot, its too clod, my feet hurt, whaa whaa waaa "

Suggesting a law like that is one of the most closed minded and stupid ideas I have ever heard of to cut fuel demand.  Especially trying to enforce it, it would never happen.  If I was a parent/student I would not let the federal government decide for me if my kids/me can drive to school, if they are paying for their own/my vehicle and gas then it is their/my right.  Special license plates, no, other people in the family can drive the vehicle, also federal government can't force states to do something like that.  I would love to see this law enforced too.  The police are going to need to pull people over because they look young, I'm sure that will work well.  Also what about the students with after school activities or jobs after school.  Are you going to have the buses make multiple trips and rounds to take them home?  Then the school districts without enough money to run buses or just barely enough to run the buses once a day?  You are going to have to make exceptions for every district that can't do that.

And then comes the big thing, driving records/privileges and public schools are state responsibilities.  No state is going to let the federal government come in a "help" like that.  Students buying parking permits and a big source of revenue for schools.  Now take that away from schools and make them pay more for their buses, I'm sure it will go over well.

Now how about a realistic solution?

Hmmm, maybe we should also demand that anyone who lives where there is public transportation (pretty much everyone here unless you are a redneck in which case see *here*) be required to take the public bus as well. Why should all those extra gallons of gas be wasted, causing more demand, to feed your pony car?

Dumbest idea ever. If you were a kid in high school right now would you like a law like this to be passed? I love how kids get all their rights taken away after the people who pass these laws enjoy their time without them as kids (see raising the drinking age). Sounds like old people like oppressing the youth.

But as society changes, regulations need to change accordingly. Im not saying i agree with OP's idea. But can you imagine the alcohol related inccidents if the legal age was still 18 (personally i would drop it just for military personell)?

But i do think that there should be stricter regs for drivers under 18, maybe if someone comes up with a good enough idea it'll drop ins. for us "older" peoples
