So got the FRPP 3.73s and Tlok (they were really Ford gears) installed. The guy was reputable, workin primarily on mustangs and american muscle for over 25 years and I payed an avg amount (400 in md). He told me that I should take 500 miles to break them in, but during this time I will get whine while decelerating. Anyone else go through this? Is it supposed to whine after the install and go away as the gears shapen? Thanks. I'm 180 miles in and they're still whining
Damn I hope this doesn't happen to me when I get mine put on... Well I don't really care about whine from the gears so much just as long as nothing is getting screwed up from it over time.

The crush sleeve? That has nothing to do with whiney gears. Like you said, it's all about how they were set up. Either the pinion depth is wrong, backlash, or he didn't shim the carrier as well as he could have. Whiney gears now will harden and stay whiney. Take it back if you aren't satisfied. I sure as heck wouldn't pay $400 for a whiney set-up. Good luck man
i just installed 4.10's (ford gears) in my f150 (by myself, i might add). They have not whined for one second, I have over 500 miles on my install. I have changed the rear gear oil, mainly to inspect, and all is well.
If the gears are whining, they are not installed correctly. as stated before, incorrect backlash (meaning the carrier is either to far away from the pinion or too close to the pinon), incorrect pinion deph, (meaning incorrect shim was used and pinion is too close or too far from carrier gear) or it could be the carrier preload, which i doubt, because that is the easiest to get right, and takes no skill to do.

[/quote] improper preload on the crush sleeve will result in the possiblity of the bearings coming loose on the pinion as they travel at about 4 times faster than the speed you are driving. crush sleeves are to put preload on those bearings to keep them where they are supposed to be. I guess it might be possible to have whine with this, but really backlash and pinion depth is the culprit you are looking at.
thanks guys. i'm gonna try to take it back as soon as i can. just for clarification, gear whine does not damage the rear end does it? mine only whines during deceleration.

Mine are starting to whine a little.. just at certain speeds.. or if I give it a little gas while cruising. I really hate bringing it back in.. but I may have too.
If I were you.. I would make sure you take care of it. I tried talking myself into believing that a little whine is the price you pay.. but it's better to bring it back sooner than later. A year from now.. when you can't take the whine anymore.. the installer might be a little more reluctant to take her back to fix the problem.

Hey man i'm glad you ended up installing your own gears despite all the ass clowns suggesting it's "way too hard". It looks like you and myself are 2 of the few that actually installed their own set of gears.

yeah, thanks for your advice.. 75% of folks on here said it wasnt worth it to install gears, most because they had never done it. I bought a instructional dvd for 35 bucks and used all tools I already owned. Not to mention that now I know exactly how the rear end is put together and how it works and how to fix it. Well worth the experience. I will be installing in the mustang next. stay tuned...
Ass Clown here. Pop that cover off, but some gear marker on the ring gear and give her a spin to see where the gears are meshing at. It should be right in the middle of the tooth. Not on the tips or heels nor to far front or to the rear but right in the middle. Or ask your tech to do it asap. Three heat cycles and the gears should be broken in.

I talked to a Ford tech a while back concerning gear whine. He told me that some of the early 05 rearends were machined wrong and in fact those rearends whine a little from the factory. If you try to put a gear set in these rear ends you will play hell to get them quite. I have an 05 and I put a gear set in it, I measured the case at the locations he indicated where machined incorrectly. My rear housing has those defects in it. My gear set is a Richmond 3:73 they do whine a bit at 45 to 55. I live with it at this point. The pinion bearing registers are a little off which cocks the pinion a bit, nothing way off mind you, but enough so you can see uneven bearing wear on the races when you break it down. Not saying this is your issue, just letting you know some housing are less than perfect, and a reputable installer may have problems getting a gearset quite in these housings. As far as my tech said it was only the 05's that had a machining problem. Not saying this is the gospel, just relating some info I was told, take it for what it's worth.
After i had my 3.73's put in (ford OEM) my tech said he couldnt get the whine out of it (25+ years in diffs) it will whine because of prevoius wear patterns from a different housing angle. It did. But after i talked more with him i found out he set the backlash at 6 thousandths....way too tight. I made him re-set the shims so backlash was at 11 thousandths ( FRPP and Motive both say the correct backlash setting is 10-12 thousandths...)...and now no noise. very quiet...BTW i got the gears and t-lock used on ebay from a ford ranger.....thought i would give it a shot...got lucky.
