jdphillips73 -> RE: gear change...breaking in...whine (4/27/2008 12:39:35 PM)

i just installed 4.10's (ford gears) in my f150 (by myself, i might add). They have not whined for one second, I have over 500 miles on my install. I have changed the rear gear oil, mainly to inspect, and all is well. If the gears are whining, they are not installed correctly. as stated before, incorrect backlash (meaning the carrier is either to far away from the pinion or too close to the pinon), incorrect pinion deph, (meaning incorrect shim was used and pinion is too close or too far from carrier gear) or it could be the carrier preload, which i doubt, because that is the easiest to get right, and takes no skill to do.
