First i would like to say hello to everyone as I am new here and this is my first post. Now to the point. I need a new car, I have a V8 mountaineer and its killing me with these gas prices. I want a car that gets decent gas mileage (average over 20mpg city/highway) and has decent performance. I have always loved mustangs so i figured i would get a V6 to save on gas because I'm only 17 and work part time. Would a used V6 be the solution to my problem?

I wouldnt get a v6, the gas milage sucks if thats what you care about, and the performance is laughable. I would advise against it.

I've got a 3.8, and the mileage, though better than your mountaineer, still isn't amazing. From what I've seen from the V8 guys, they get the same mpg as me with my 6. Look at it this way, you are comparing a relatively big 6 to a somewhat small 8. The 8 will have better performance, and the mpg will probably be very simliar.

Look at insurance, too. If you are only 17, a V8 will probably run you pretty high on insurance.

OK maybe the V6 mustangs isn't what I thought it would be, I know the GT will be way to much for insurance and I don't want to get some damn little 4 banger car.

Dude get the v6 stang.  The gas is average, and gives you a lot more credit than a honda.

If you want a gas saver don't even bother looking at Mustangs. The V6 gets the same as a GT, and insurance for a GT isn't that much more if you shop around. But you said you want like 20mpg city, so I'd just forget Mustangs all together. You'll be looking at imports and 4 bangers if you want mileage.

You can get a Sixer but eventually you will start getting mods, all kinds...body to power adders. So not just the gas but you will be paying for a lot of things. And once you start moding your car it will be hard to stop!

I looked up online that the V6 mustang is rated at like 17mpg city and 26mpg highway. Is anyone getting these numbers because that is plenty good enough for me compared to what I am getting now (10mpg all the time). I'm not looking for great gas mileage just decent and some ok performance to match. I'm not looking to get a 10 second car out of it.

that sounds about right. I've been getting around 23-24 combined driving, though mostly highway. It is definitely better than 10 :P

I don't understand how everyone is getting that bad of gas mileage.  Is the split port really sucking up that much more gas?  I have a 95 and I get 30mpg all day long on the freeway and I have 226k on her.  Around town, roughly 24-26mpg which I think is pretty good, considering stop lights, traffic, cars in my way, etc...  If the new edge's are doing that bad on gas, get a GT, at least you'll have more power and roughly the same MPG.

OK those gas mileage numbers sound pretty good to me. I think I'm going to get the V6 now I just have to sell my mountaineer.

The MPG sticker on the V6 sez 16 city but there is smaller print below that says expected range for most drivers 13 - 19 mpg is typical. I just bought an '08 with the V6. I have only driven it 60 miles. In that 60 miles the message center shows 12.8 MPG. This is driving on regular roads at varied speeds from 25mph to about 45mph(because breaking the new engine in).

6-Speed LS1 cars get 23-25 mpg.

All kidding aside, I've been really easy on the GTO lately since it's damn near $4/gallon, and it's been getting 20-21 mpg.
