Yikes.  A brute of a job, especially alone.  A lot of digging, a lot of raking.  A lot of grass seed.  Now I've just gotta keep watering it, and hopefully in a few days I'll see some green.

Anyone here have any advice or tips on seeding a lawn?  This is my first attempt.

I spread out the seed, water the hell out of it and wish it the best of luck.  After a month or so hit it with some Miracle Grow.  Everything loves that stuff.

What I did before I planted the centipede & rye was hit the ground with a couple bags of milorganite (people poop).  The rye grass shot up in just a couple of days but that centipede takes about a year to really take off.

Just keep it wet and throw it some food once in a while.

I gave up on pulling the weeds after the hurricanes.  The lawn was trashed after that.  Up until then I had about 7000+ sq. ft. of the prettiest St. Augustine grass you have ever seen.  All of the weed seeds blown in by the storms made short work of that.

These days, if it's green, I mow it.

Fair warning. You have now taken the first step into the world of Lawn Nazis. Let it dry up and blow away or become a slave.

Or you could give the finger to the lawn nazis.

I have better things to do these days than get anal over my lawn.  Keep it green and keep it short and it's all good.

I have nothing better to do these days than get anal on my lawn.  Keep it brown and keep it short and it's all good.

It is a very small piece of lawn; actually have a little non-motorized hand mower for it.  Hey, can help me stay in shape.

We'll see if it comes in.  They had done work there and that is why it was bare.

Time to start watering... *sigh*

Hahahahaha, I'm sorry. That was entirely expected but for some reason it made me burst out laughing here at work. I think it's because it was such an immediate and first reply.

But the most important part is the prep. If you did a good job of breaking up the soil (and thus aerating it), getting rid of rocks, etc, then the hard part is over. Seed it with your favorite grass, cover it in hay as previously mentioned, and set it up to water early every morning. Oh, and don't let anyone walk through it. You should have great growth in no time at all. Resist the temptation to cut it for a while though. When it's first growing it's very fragile, walking on it can hurt it and the roots haven't taken much yet, so you can rip it out easy trying to cut it.

i can always tell when people are seeding there lawns, theres always a bunch of nasty brown like algae in the gutters and gets in the storm drains than goes into the creeks.

I had to seed under the trees two years ago since Bermuda doesn't grow in shade. Yep, the prep work is a pain. It came up great with water, but, I need to do it again this year to catch a few patches I missed or the birds got.   *sigh* I know some people like working in the yard......NOT me      BTW.....+1 on everything AJ said.

Haha, you should call up my grandpa. He has a big yard in Owasso (I think it's at least an acre) and loves nothing more than to just go get on his tractor and mow it all day long. I do like relaxing and doing some yard work, but I couldn't do as much as he does. It'd drive me crazy having to mow that much.
