So I started thinking abot getting a sports bike b/c I might be driving an hour to school and an hour back next winter semester and I dont want to put those kind of miles on the GT. First I kow it would probably be in my best interest to start off with something not to powerful so what would you guys suggest? Also Im only looking to spend around 2-3K so obviously nothing fancy. And my last question is how much should I look at for insurance since ill be 20. Any feedback is appreciated and wanted. Learn me.

I would go with something like a ninga 250R or something similar. They are around $3500 new here anyway.

my friends first bike was a 600, he sold it in two weeks to get something better. start big, theres no reason to learn how to ride a slower bike if your just gonna upgrade. and you will upgrade.

At your age, powerful sport bike insurance is gonna be extremely high. Most will tell you that they would not recomend a sport bike with more than two cylinders for a beginner. 4 cylinder bike = death.

My first bike was an 04 Honda Silverwing Scooter. It had a twin 600cc, 49hp motor, I could carry an 18 pack under the seat and it did well over 100mph. I rode that for 15,000 miles over two years. I now have an 06 Yamadog FJR1300.

Good luck.

If he is a beginner, he should start with lower displacement bikes.

Well I really dont think ill want to keep upgrading. Im not really into racing bikes just want a DD for school. Ill of course take a class since I dont have any experience. Plus the more money I spend on a bike the less for the car. I was looking at something like a 250 Ninja like you said speedstang. Ill look into those more.

Honestly the thought of going down the highway at 70mph in open air is kind of scary. Ive rode on the back of a Harley on the highway and I was a little nervous. And honestly ive never taken my CAR over 130 and I only went that fast once. I would like to think that im not some kid who does dumb****. If I wanted to commit suicide I would just put my 9mm in my mouth and pull the trigger.

I'd say go with a ninja 250R. I'm currently looking at a new 08. I'm not a noob to "bikes" as I had a dirt bike for years, but I am new to street bikes. The 250R is really cheap (3500 for a new 08), good gas mileage(up to 70mpg), and looks like a bigger cc bike (well at least the new 08 does, the other ones are ugly [:'(]).

I dont agree at all.

1st there is NO possible way to use a 600 sport bike to it's full potential on the streets. If you're a pro you MIGHT be able to do it on the track.

A600 is more than enough bike for anybody. If you get a liter bike you're just throughing money down the drain. I'll run circles around them all day on my 600.

I'd say the 250 ninja wouldbe perfect for you to start out on.

Buy a bike a couple years old. They're gonna be cheaper & will let you find out if you REALLY are into biking. And, if it does tip over in a parking lot or whatever, you're not gonna cry as much as if you scratch up a shiny new bike.

If you find you REALLY like it then sell the used bike for almost the same you paid for it & buy another "bigger" one then. You'll know a LOT better then exactly what you want

I'd say get a used Ninja 250. They're cheap, reliable, and you won't kill yourself. (maybe) You'll also learn to ride better than if you'd started on a big bike.

Take the MSF, wear all your gear all the time, and act like every person on the road is out to kill you.

Good luck. Riding is a blast.

Edit: AND DON'T get an SS. You'll kill yourself.

And- Get full gear. Helmet, jacket, pants, gloves, boots, alldesigned for riding. The first time you fall you'll be glad you did.

ive been riding for 3yrs, in thouse 3yrs ive put over 17k miles on sport bikes.

my first bike was a kawasaki ex500, got 55mpg, and on that bike (when i got good at riding) ive beat svt cobras, the audi TT, countless ricers, mustangs, you name it, and the bike has 50hp and 30ft lbs of trq!

i now have a 2007 SV1000S.....last night, 20min after 1am, i got a knock on my door that someone stole my bike, draged it down the street, and dumped it.

got the bike back, damages arnt bad at all.........but it wakes you up

the bike isent really rideable, i have about 1inch of my cluch lever, and about 2inch's of my shift lever (yea, that was fun shifting).

i had a cover on the bike, and a lock on the brake rotor.....($120 lock)

if it wasent for someone hearing them, and yelling at them, i wouldent have my bike right now.......

n-e-way, enough of my sobb story...

the 2008 kawasaki ninja 250 is an amazing bike, i LOVE the power of a 1000, but you cant beat the good looks, cheap price, and 70+mpg....

the ninja has prob around 30hp, and 18ftlbs..... but the bike is prob 100-150lbs lighter then my bike.

you wont be whoopin up on ppl, but you wont be getting passed (well, on the highway over 80mph a ptcruiser will dust you)

go for it.

my real advice, most realistic, and best bet, is to wait untill the 08' ninjas start selling, then buy a older 250, you can find 250's for $1500!!!!

there god ugly, but it will save you some cash

(listen for engine knocking, bald tires, suspention that bottoms out under pressure, crappy brakes, klunky shifting, and make sure gadges and lights work)

Just out of curiosity, how fast would a 250 be 0-60 or in the 1/4 mile?

302army187
04-21-2008, 10:26 PM
a 250 would prob be in the mid 14's i think, and thats prob best rider, best conditions, etc.......

heres a quote from wikipedia.com
"Capable of running the 1/4[/b] mile[/b] in 14.6 seconds at 88mph"

Thanks for the advice. Coming from a guy with some experience under his belt ill listen wisely. I was reading somewhere and it said a 250 would be good for about 65 or so but a 08 Ninja 250 will do 70 at least right? The no top end would probably be best anyways incase I do decide to try and get brave one night I wont be going very fast lol.

i rode with a guy that was 250lbs, and he could only hit 90mph at best (down hill, wind, etc) thats on the old 250 ninjas

if your a lighter guy, you could hit 90mph as a top speed on a flat serface.

if you do get the bike, dont be afraid to rev her up, shes not going to make power under 5k rpm, on the 250 youll be at 7k-8k rpm on the highway, these bike will take a beating, its almost impossible to blow the engine, and i really mean that.

also, dont skip out on gear, buy a nice helmet, jacket, and gloves.

the size doesn't matter it only goes as fast as you twist the handle

if your riding an hour then i would really think about going for a cruiser! heck a used 2007+ 883 sportster with the efi will get 60mpg and be quick enough to be satisfied with it, its right in the middle not to small not to big. plus the insurance will be alot cheaper than any sport bike, i think they have new ones for $99 a month and my insurancve with a reckless driving charge was still only 50 for full coverage

a honda or harley wont get 70mpg ever.
a ninja 250 is cheap on insurance (buddy was 25 payed $25 a mth for full coverage)

a harley is heavy, and boring, and a honda 600 is a little to much power
the bull**** about "its as fast as you twist the throttle" is just hard headed bull**** talk!

you mean your NEVER EVER going to wind the throttle to much, and dump the clutch a little to fast at the same time on accident??

on a 250, you would lerch forward a little, on a 600, youll be on your ass with the bike on top of you

and if your riding a hr, and sport bike is gonna suck, but a 250 has a upright position, and is very comfy for a "sport bike"

some company's make 125, 250, 500 cruisers, that are pretty cheap, 3k-5k but you wont find them very often used, the 250 you will always find a ton of, and they will always have good prices.

its the most logical choice.

yeah i've sat on it and it is quite uncomfortable at firstbut once you get moving its not too bad and i plan on getting the gel seat for it

i'm 6'2 btw so the height doesnt bother me .. just the ergonomics kinda get me where you lean forward so far but its not too bad .. the awesomeness of the looks and the amazing engine makes up for it and its not really for long rides

i fell in love with the 675 the first time i heard the intake in the upper rpms, i love the idle too, ****ing sex

the SV1000 was the next choice, and after sitting on both, i liked the sv better

I've never personally ridden one alone, butI have been on the back of one many times. It is very scary at first, and you have to have a lot of faith and trust in the person your with. Going 100+mph with nothing around you is quite scary indeed, but there is nothing like it either.

As for being "scary", you're damn right it can be scary. I remember riding on the back of his Yamaha R1 once passing a car on a curvy two lane highway.........I can remember watching the speedo just keep climbing and climbing........I was scared to death.Sportbikes can be great fun, but that was one time I prayed until itwas time to get off of it!!!

awesome. yeah im around 220. Thanks for the advice. Yeah I plan on the jacket, helmet, gloves, boots and pants maybe for just bs-ing but since Ill be going to class im not going to try and make people think that im right out of the movie "Torque"

Hopefully I will be able to egt my insurance and bike payment down to around 100 bucks/month. I have some money I was saving up for nitrous but ive decided to get a 2010 GT so then I was gonna use that for mod money but hell ill just use it for my DD to keep miles off the GT.

I did the insurance quotes online and they quoted me at 63/month and then another place quoted me at 3x/month for 11 months and 1 month would be like 78 I believe. I have to talk my parent sinto this as they pay for my car insurance and school so I cant piss them off but i may get it a little cheaper by adding the bike to our current policy.
